What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical/Practice Group CEO/COO position at Medical Group Management Association?

We work with well-respected private equity firms that specialize in healthcare investments and are strong strategic partners to their operating companies. Most of our clients are specialty platform roll-ups, which acquire regional practice groups and tuck them into the national platform. We have clients across all specialties of healthcare including, but not limited to, orthodontic/oral surgery, vision, fertility, behavioral, urology, radiology, orthopaedic, veterinary, etc. Our searches cover all C-level functions that include equity.
Among some of our most frequent searches are Medical Practice Groups CEOs/COOs overseeing a regional group of outpatient centers with P&Ls ranging from $50 - $300M reporting to someone in the national platform leadership team. The roles are responsible for all business and clinical operations of a regional practice group(s), leading and supporting organizational policies, staff, and processes. We are looking for seasoned multi-site operators who understand operational and financial excellence, possess strong relationship building skills (especially with physicians), are both strategic and analytical, and comfortable in growth environments.

Responsibilities:
- Communicating clearly and concisely on all substantial practice activities and/or plans with established agendas, metrics, and reports on a monthly basis. Supporting partner meetings, proactively bringing issues to the forefront with suggested options and proposed solutions alike. Does same with staff.
- Helping develop a long-term business strategy for the practice. Constantly assessing risks and opportunities in the local and regional market.
- Working directly with the practice groups CFO, Director of Operations and Director of Marketing to finalize monthly operating review and forecasting and ensure operational and financial indicators are aligned.
- Working with physicians across the organization to ensure that the clinical and business priorities set for the year are aligned and being executed in a timely and effective fashion. Attendance at committee and section meetings, regular site visits, and other face-to-face interactions will be key in developing credibility with physician partners/owners /customers.
- Serving as a key leader in all hospital-related meetings and projects (including joint venture operations) to include hospital-based practice resource needs, efficiency and staffing issues, strategic planning, expansion of hospital footprint (and associated radiology support), certificate of need planning, etc. Overseeing and coordinating all operational management of group while creating transparency by providing a safe environment for team members to proactively provide input on the front-end of decisions that will affect their areas of responsibility
- Providing annual performance appraisals and recommendations for improvement, as well as continuing education/professional development for all direct reports and ensuring that all employees receive the same from their immediate supervisor(s). Tracking and providing input on the progress of all employee performance quarterly.
- Enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness through use of best practices at all times and putting in place a system for each department to share same on a regular basis, holding all accountable for improved performance metrics related to same.
- Overseeing and coordinating budgets, facility space requirements and workflow planning: including well researched/current data, financial pro-formats, and operational work plans.
- Participating on all committees as needed and assigned. Providing governance education of national best practices on an ongoing basis.
- Overseeing the development, implementation, and revision of all operational policies and procedures on an ongoing basis. Recommending procedures regarding staffing needs as well as physician legislative and governance matters.
- Working with the compliance officer and legal team to remain current with all state and national regulatory accreditations and requirements, remaining abreast of all compliance and legal issues.
- Partnering with the Director of Marketing in being responsible for the ultimate scores in and around all patient and family experience, satisfaction, and staff initiatives. Creating, driving, and tracking KPIs and quality indicators for same.
- Ensuring clear and consistent goal development and educational/team development through consistent internal communications, holding self and all within the practice accountable all times to solid performance objectives.
- Confidently guiding and getting in the trenches as needed, but not micro-managing. Delegating appropriately and setting priorities with reasonable expectations.
- Enhancing own professional growth as a proactive continual learner. Attending professional meetings and seminars as needed and approved, staying ahead of industry trends and practices. Demonstrating genuine ambition for personal and professional growth and development.
- Researching patient quality care enhancement opportunities, ensuring and monitoring patient satisfaction.
- Working with procurement to oversee and monitor, as appropriate, all vendor relations and contractual arrangements/annual review and negotiations of same.
- Working with national leaders and clinical Board leaders to keep all team members and physicians updated through a systemic communications plan to include town halls, daily emails, weekly meetings, etc. in order that both key stakeholders and administrators are informed prior to hearing the results of key decisions from other staff members after the fact.
- Gathering feedback from physicians prior to group discussions to assess current needs and issues so as to ensure a physician-driven agenda rather than personal agenda is established; circulating issues to be discussed prior to actual meetings, ensuring that all are on the same page early on in the process and are those that strategically make sense to bring to the group at large.
- Carrying out any other duties and responsibilities.
Qualifications:
Target candidates should possess most of the following characteristics/qualities:
- Demonstrated track record of progressive advancement and success in key operational roles within a multi-site service delivery business. Specific experience in change management during a time of organizational evolution preferred. For profit healthcare experience highly preferred.
- Proven experience developing and maintaining well-functioning working relationships with large, complex stakeholders and other provider partners to promote future maximization of the practice's capabilities.
