What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Dispatcher position at Medic Ambulance Service?

Summary:

Ambulance Dispatcher using two-way radios and a computer-based data system. This is rotating 12-hour shift work and involves communication with criminal justice agencies, fire departments, hospitals, often in life and death situations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor status of Units
  • Receives and dispatches information to ambulance units using public safety 10-code, two-way radios, and telephones.
  • Directs ambulances to scenes of calls.
  • Talks to citizens requesting assistance during crisis situations and relay emergency medical information as needed.
  • Receives complaints from citizens via telephone.
  • Evaluates situations often of an emergency nature.
  • Monitors scanners in order to provide assistance during emergency conditions.
  • Schedule ALS and BLS transfers that originate within Solano County in a timely manner.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Medic Ambulance Service contracts with other agencies.
  • Properly post units throughout Solano County and Sacramento County
  • Input and retrieve information via computer in an accurate manner.
  • Schedule transfers for Sacramento Units
  • Protect and maintain confidential information.
  • Gather paperwork for billing office.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to learn highly sophisticated computer functions.
  • Ability to type 35 words per minute.
  • Ability to read maps.
  • Ability to hear well and speak clearly, give clear, concise directions using telephones and two-way radios.
  • Ability to react calmly and speak clearly in crisis situations.
  • Ability to learn and use the public safety 10-codes and proper procedures.
  • Ability to learn and use proper report writing techniques.
  • Ability to learn to funciton in a controlled environment with constant noise and work pressure.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts.
  • Ability to understand and learn basic medical terminology.

Work Environment:

  • Work 12-hour shifts, day or night shifts.

  • Constant noise including phones, police scanners, computers, lights and ambulance sirens.
  • High pressure
