The Automotive Painter is responsible for preparing, refinishing, and restoring ambulances, emergency vehicles, and commercial fleet vehicles to manufacturer and company quality standards. This position performs all aspects of surface preparation, paint application, color matching, finishing, and quality control while maintaining compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.

The Automotive Painter works closely with Fleet Maintenance Technicians and Fleet Leadership to ensure fleet vehicles maintain a professional appearance and are returned to service safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner. This position supports Medic Ambulance's commitment to maintaining a clean, professional, and highly visible emergency response fleet while also supporting future commercial fleet customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Prepare ambulances, emergency vehicles, and commercial fleet vehicles for refinishing.

· Sand, grind, strip, clean, and repair painted surfaces prior to refinishing.

· Perform body filler application, glazing, and primer surfacing to produce smooth paint-ready finishes.

· Mask and protect adjacent vehicle components during refinishing operations.

· Mix paint and coatings using manufacturer specifications and computerized color-matching systems.

· Apply primers, base coats, clear coats, and specialty coatings utilizing HVLP spray equipment and approved paint booth procedures.

· Blend adjacent panels to ensure seamless color transitions and factory-quality finishes.

· Wet sand, buff, polish, and correct paint imperfections as necessary.

· Remove and reinstall decals, striping, reflective graphics, and fleet markings.

· Assist with minor body repairs including fiberglass, aluminum, and steel panel preparation.

· Inspect completed work to ensure quality standards are met before vehicles return to service.

· Maintain paint booths, spray equipment, mixing stations, and refinishing tools in safe operating condition.

· Maintain accurate inventory of paint materials, supplies, and hazardous materials.

· Follow all OSHA, EPA, CARB, and company safety regulations regarding paint storage, ventilation, hazardous waste handling, and personal protective equipment.

· Work collaboratively with Fleet Maintenance Technicians to coordinate vehicle repairs and refinishing schedules.

· Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent required.

· One (1) to three (3) years of automotive refinishing experience preferred.

· Experience painting fleet vehicles, emergency vehicles, commercial trucks, or similar equipment preferred.

· Valid California Driver License with an acceptable driving record.

· Ability to safely operate ambulances and fleet vehicles.

· Working knowledge of automotive paint systems, refinishing materials, and application techniques.

· Ability to read technical service information and paint manufacturer specifications.

· Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Preferred Experience

  • ASE Refinishing Certification.
  • I-CAR Paint and Refinishing Certification.
  • Experience painting ambulances, fire apparatus, buses, or commercial fleet vehicles.
  • Experience with computerized color matching systems.
  • Experience operating downdraft paint booths.
  • Knowledge of vinyl graphics and emergency vehicle striping.
  • Familiarity with fleet maintenance software and work order systems.

Physical Demands

· Ability to stand, walk, and move around the shop for extended periods

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally

· Ability to operate tools and equipment as needed

· Determine appropriate refinishing procedures based on vehicle condition.

· Select proper materials and coatings.

· Prioritize assigned work to support fleet readiness.

· Identify repairs requiring additional body work before painting.

· Protect company equipment and paint materials.

· Assist in controlling refinishing costs through efficient work practices.

Communication

· Communicates clearly and professionally with fleet technicians, leadership, and internal departments

· Provides regular updates on fleet status, vehicle readiness, and maintenance priorities

· Coordinates with operations to ensure alignment between fleet availability and deployment needs

· Interfaces with vendors and service providers regarding repairs, parts, and service timelines

· Addresses customer inquiries and maintains strong relationships with internal and external clients

· Documents maintenance activities, issues, and resolutions accurately and timely

Results of Action

The Automotive Painter directly contributes to maintaining a professional fleet appearance, extending vehicle life, reducing corrosion, improving customer perception, and ensuring ambulances and fleet vehicles are returned to service safely and efficiently.

Work Environment

· Automotive paint booth and fleet maintenance facility.

· Exposure to paint fumes, solvents, chemicals, moving vehicles, and power equipment.

· Fast-paced environment supporting a 24-hour emergency medical services operation.

· Required use of respirators, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and other personal protective equipment.

· Indoor and occasional outdoor work in varying temperatures.

Pay Scale Range

$30-$35
