MECOSTA COUNTY PROBATE and FAMILY COURT CLERK (full time position)

POSTING DATE: July 16, 2026

START DATE: As early as August 3, 2026

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or its equivalent. Prefer some college level coursework. Prefer experience working in an office setting with familiarity working with the public, data processing, accounting, and related areas. Prefer some experience in Probate and Family Court or closely related setting preforming functions providing a working knowledge of Probate and Family Court procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists with clerical support tasks in the Probate and Family Court, including answering the telephone or window, typing correspondence and other documents, maintaining files, and performing other duties as needed.

2. Opens, sorts, and distributes mail. Responds to general correspondence and reviews documents for completeness.

3. Prepares and maintains the weekly court docket, including reviewing the docket daily for adjournments and preparing files.

4. Assists in opening case files and new petitions, obtaining hearing dates, appointing legal counsel as requested or mandated, and completing other steps necessary to initiate case.

5. Assists in setting court calendar and schedules for the Judge and Referee. Coordinates scheduling with attorneys and other involved parties and ensures compliance with mandated time frames. Keeps computerized docket system up to date. Assists in preparing any notices necessary for court hearings.

6. Assists in reviewing files and ensures their readiness for courtroom action, ensures proper noticing, ensures that all orders and forms are properly completed, and sees that hearing and trial dates are set.

7. Assists in entering hearing information to the JIS system and updates information as necessary. Enters Probate and Family Court case information to the system including information on the petition, parties, and the event information from the complaint, notice of hearing, and other documentation.

8. Receipts monies collected from court orders or filings and assists in preparing deposits. Secures and accounts for monies collected.

9. Assists in maintaining all records and files of the Probate and Family Court, including court legal and social or confidential files, computer case management system, and placement records. Prepares forms as needed to get permission from the State to destroy records.

10. Responsible for certified mailings for designated hearings, including show causes, and may serve process on individuals coming to court.

11. Assists in case processing, data entry, file maintenance, and document preparation related to adoption cases.

12. Serves as back-up Court Recorder.

13. Orders supplies, maintains inventory of forms, and performs a variety of related office support functions.

14. Performs various duties and tasks as assigned by the Probate Register, Family Court Referee, or Judge - not otherwise noted above.

15. Responsible to abide by the Model Code of Conduct for the Michigan Trial Court Employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in office setting.

COMPENSATION: Starting rate of $19.86 per hour
