Salary Range: $20.00 to $23.07 per hour. This is a nonexempt (hourly) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. Services For Adults (SFA) is a part of the Adult Services Division of the Mecklenburg County Department of Child, Family, & Adult Services. The division is responsible for four main program areas: Adult Social Work Services, Community Social Work, the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program, and the Mecklenburg Transportation System (MTS).

Position Summary

Provides safe, efficient human service and general public transportation of passengers to and from their destinations in the Charlotte/County area.

Position Specific Information

The ideal candidate for the Commercial Driver must be available during regular business hours of 6:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday. Standard hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours of operation are subject to change.

Involves safely transporting passengers on a pre-determined route and adhere to the schedule, adhering to traffic laws and regulations, and ensuring the LTV vehicle is cleaned, maintained and inspected. Also includes assisting passengers door-to-door if necessary and collection of and accurate documentation of fares and contributions is required. Must be willing to provide transportation to special events or for emergency response needs. Will perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, lift counts and document all inspections on digital tablet.

Must be able to perform safety sensitive functions and navigate through the use of mobile data computer units. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with people in stressful situations; possess good customer relations/interpersonal skills and communication skills. Must have the ability to think logically to address problems and issues. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, talking and hearing.

Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10lbs of force occasionally. Must be able to push and pull 300lbs and lift a minimum of 40lbs. The vehicle operator must be physically capable of assisting persons with disabilities and have knowledge of operating and assisting with all electrical and manual wheelchairs and Jerri chairs. Must be able to read road maps and operate a two-way radio system.

Some out of county transportation may be necessary. Employee is responsible for completing daily inspections of vehicles, fueling, and maintaining interior and exterior cleanliness of vehicle, maintaining accurate trip records, radio communication, assisting passengers as required and other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

For Mecklenburg Transportation System (MTS) drivers:
Understand and comply with traffic laws and regulations
Employ radio communication with dispatch
Read and interpret road maps/GPS system
Maintain accurate trip records either on paper or electronically
Collect and accurately documents fares and contributions
Perform basic vehicle maintenance-daily inspections of the vehicle, fuel check, maintaining the interior and exterior cleanliness of the vehicle
Assist passengers with boarding, in-transit, and de-boarding as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of one year of experience driving a commercial vehicle and an acceptable driving record per county standards.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: N/A

Licenses and Certifications:
Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
Requires County Driving Privileges
Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required
Requires Class A or B CDL with one or more of the following endorsements, P (Passenger Transport).
