Job Summary: A Yard Manager is responsible for the outside lumberyard area and supervising the work of yard staff (loaders/pullers/drivers). Key areas of staff training include product knowledge; unloading and loading procedures, delivery and storage protocols, customer service skills, and safety procedures.
- Keep yard product organized and organized/laid out in an efficient manner.
- Ensure secure inventory procedures are in place for products entering and leaving the yard.
- Monitor equipment, making sure it’s in good operational condition.
- Ensure safety rules and company policies are consistently followed.
- Supervise staff by assigning daily work duties, monitoring performance, and providing corrective guidance.
- Provide initial and ongoing training in product knowledge, unloading/loading, delivery procedures, product storage, customer service, and safety practices.
- Participate in product and yard operations trainings to keep knowledge current.
- Complete annual employee performance appraisals.
- Manage customer questions, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
- Keep manager apprised of significant customer services, seeking input as necessary for proper resolution.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with customers and vendors.
- Oversee dispatch functions and provide clear direction to yard and driver staff to ensure efficient and timely service.
- Support hiring efforts and provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and training in customer service, store procedures, and company culture.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, and enhance safety compliance in accordance with OSHA and DOT standards.
- Perform additional job related duties as assigned or as situations dictate.
- High School diploma or GED Required.
- At least 2 years of lumber yard experience required.
- Prior supervisory experience desired.
- Knowledge of yard operations and related procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable Safety, OSHA, and DOT regulations.
- Ability to lead, teach, and motivate employees.
- Ability to recognize problems and find timely and appropriate solutions.
- Physical strength to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, kneel and crouch frequently.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Superior organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to keep proprietary information confidential.
