Overview
The Utility Pipe Layer installs, aligns, and repairs underground utility pipe systems including water, sewer, storm drainage, and other related infrastructure. This role involves trench excavation, pipe placement, grade setting, and ensuring proper jointing and backfilling in accordance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Install underground utility pipes (water, sewer, storm, drain) using proper techniques.
- Grade and align pipe using lasers, levels, and other measuring tools to ensure proper slope and flow.
- Prepare and excavate trenches using hand tools or by working collaboratively with equipment operators.
- Connect pipes using couplings, clamps, gluing, or other appropriate methods depending on pipe type.
- Inspect pipe systems to ensure joints are tight, bedding is correct, and installation meets specification.
- Backfill trenches while ensuring proper compaction and protection of installed utilities.
- Read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and job specifications.
- Operate and assist with construction equipment such as compactors, trench boxes, plate tampers, and small machinery.
- Perform routine site preparation and cleanup around work areas.
- Follow all safety protocols, including trench safety, PPE use, and OSHA guidelines.
Qualifications
- Experience as a pipe layer on in underground utility construction preferred.
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and grade stakes.
- Knowledge of pipe types (PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, concrete, etc.)
- Familiarity with trench safety practices and equipment.
- Physical ability to perform demanding labor outdoors in varying conditions.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Valid ID.
- Certification in confined space entry or OSHA training is a plus.
Physical Requiments
- Ability to lift 50-100 lbs regularly.
- Standing, bending, and kneeling of extended periods.
- Working in trenches and outdoor jobsite environments.
- Operating hand tools and equipment for long durations.
