The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department exists to serve UT MD Anderson research programs. Our primary aim is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards.

Senior Animal Resources Technologist provides the highest quality of technical skills necessary for animal health care and provides support for the overall operations of the animal programs.

The ideal Senior Animal Resources Technologist will have an Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology (Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science or Animal Science preferred), along with strong clinical or surgical animal care experience, and preferred licensure such as LVT, RVT, or CVT. This individual should demonstrate strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a clinical environment with strong animal odors.

Minimum $29.53 - Midpoint $35.34 - Maximum $41.39
Onsite: M-F 6:30am- 3:00pm with rotational weekends

Responsibilities

Research Support
  • Assist investigators with research projects including surgical support, specimen collection, and specialized housing maintenance
  • Coordinate, schedule, and prepare research activities, including all associated documentation
  • Maintain knowledge of animal handling techniques, procedures, and equipment across multiple species
  • Provide guidance on best practices for conducting research procedures
  • Support research activities at offsite locations

Training & Technical Support
  • Support educational training programs, including AALAS certification classes
  • Coordinate scheduling and oversight of researcher training and services
  • Participate in technical training sessions for department and research staff
  • Provide technical assistance and enter billing data in electronic systems

Post Approval Monitoring (PAM)
  • Observe research procedures to ensure compliance with IACUC protocols
  • Provide guidance to align procedures with approved protocols
  • Recommend training based on observed compliance gaps
  • Prepare reports and communicate findings to veterinarians and IACUC

Animal Import & Export Coordination
  • Coordinate animal import and export processes with external institutions
  • Ensure safe, humane transport and complete documentation
  • Provide progress updates to investigators and veterinarians
  • Resolve delays and respond to stakeholder inquiries

Animal Healthcare & Documentation
  • Maintain and update animal health records in electronic systems
  • Document controlled substance usage and clinical observations
  • Perform treatments, animal care procedures, and specialized housing support
  • Monitor equipment such as cage racks and water systems and report issues
  • Perform rodent weaning, specialized feeding, and water setup tasks
  • Participate in quality assurance procedures and maintain accurate records
  • Provide backup support for daily health rounds and treatments
  • Enter billing and research data into applicable systems

Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION
  • Required: Associate's Degree Veterinary Technology.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Biomedical Science or Animal Science.

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Required: Three years Supervisory/team lead experience in clinical or surgical animal procedures; or animal health care and husbandry. or two years required experience with preferred licensure.
  • Preferred: Prior experience in clinical animal procedures
  • May substitute required education with experience on a one to one basis.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Required: LAT - Laboratory Animal Technician American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). within 180 Days. Any employee hired or rehired after September 1, 2012 must possess required certification.
  • Preferred: LVT - Licensed Veterinary Technician Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) Upon Hire or VT - Reg Veterinary Tech Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Upon Hire or Certified Veterinary Technician-NAVTA Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) Upon Hire
