Schedule: 8:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday; Full-Time

McLean County is looking for a dedicated Administrative Specialist III to support the work of the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC). In this critical front-line role, you’ll provide a wide range of administrative and clerical support while helping connect Veterans and their families to the services and benefits they’ve earned.
What You’ll Do:
As part of a small but impactful team, you will:
- Assist Veterans in completing key documents to access military records, healthcare, and benefits.
- Conduct initial triage interviews to determine Veterans' needs and refer them to appropriate internal or external services.
- Help coordinate financial assistance requests and service-connected disability claims.
- Provide compassionate support to families navigating VA burial and memorial benefits.
- Maintain and manage records, databases, and filing systems with a high level of accuracy and confidentiality.
- Create newsletters, brochures, and correspondence that help keep the Veteran community informed.
- Oversee VAC food pantry operations and other community-facing services.
- Organize meetings, manage calendars, coordinate travel arrangements, and take meeting minutes.
- Handle billing, payroll entries, and purchasing for office supplies.
- Serve as a knowledgeable, resourceful contact for staff, clients, and external agencies.
What You Bring:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- 1–3 years of clerical, accounting, or customer service experience—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn internal systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- A collaborative, service-minded approach to working with Veterans, families, staff, and the public.
- While not required at the time of hire, you must be able to complete the National Association of County Veterans Assistance Certification course after hire.
- Knowledge of Veterans benefit programs and applications a plus.
Physical & Work Environment:
This is primarily sedentary work requiring light physical effort (lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally). It requires attention to detail, strong decision-making skills, and the ability to work in a typical office environment.
