Position Summary:
Responsible for the administration and management of services and personnel in all assigned nursing units, in collaboration with or in the absence of Administration and Nurse Managers. Demonstrates a leadership role in the coordination of patient care through the appropriate utilization of all resources: staff, equipment, supplies, etc. Oversee the placement of patients using expert planning and critical thinking skills as a clinical resource to both the nursing staff and physicians.
Essential Functions and responsibilities:
- Responsible for supervising the nursing care of the medical center. Handles basic administrative responsibilities and ensures the appropriate nurse manager or Medical Center administrator is informed of unusual events or activities and seeks advice.
- Oversee the staffing, assignments and staffing adjustments within the Medical Center using grids developed for individual units, to ensure proper levels of staffing are evident to meet patient care needs.
- Evaluates the needs for nursing personnel to care for patients throughout the hospital to establish needs for overtime and agency staff. Monitors staffing on a shift-by-shift basis to ensure that needs for nursing personnel have been met and develop an emergent staffing plan if they have not.
- Participate in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities, through identification of quality improvement opportunities, goal setting, collection and evaluation of data, implementation of action plans or related application.
- Assists in planning and implementation of departmental policies.
- Visits nursing units to oversee nursing care, assess operations and validate bed status.
- Advises and assists nursing staff in orientation with new and unusual medications or treatments during emergency situations.
- Makes appropriate judgments related to the placement of patients determining the order/number of inter-unit transfers based on ED/OR needs. Assigns patients to units based on the nature of the illness, clinical necessity and staffing efficiency.
- Monitors key indicators of patient throughput efficiency and contributes to the planning and implementation of improvement strategies. Leads performance improvement activities related to throughput.
- Leads performance improvement activities related to patient throughput.
- Assists in evaluating employees.
- Assists the Employee Health Department by evaluating an employee’s Fitness for Duty and evaluating employees who have had exposure to blood and body secretions, when that department is unavailable. Completes the appropriate records for exposures.
- Maintains and promotes confidentiality of all patients, employees, and physician information.
- Performs related duties as required or requested.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Associate’s degree in nursing
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse to practice nursing in Michigan
- A minimum of 2 years’ nursing-related experience
- BLS Certification
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related health care field
- ACLS Certification
