MPB is seeking a people-first Human Resources Director to lead the full spectrum of HR operations across our firm. Reporting directly to the Managing Partner, the HR Director will serve as a strategic partner and trusted advisor by helping shape programs that attract, develop, and retain exceptional accounting talent, while championing the culture and values that have defined MPB for 100 years.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands the unique rhythms of a CPA firm (busy seasons, CPE requirements, etc.) and is energized by building programs that help people grow in their careers. You'll play a key role in coordinating MPB most valuable resource: its people.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
- Lead full-cycle recruiting for all positions (from entry-level staff accountants to senior managers)
- Build and maintain relationships with universities, accounting programs, and professional associations to develop a strong candidate pipeline
- Partner with firm leadership and Resource Manager to forecast staffing needs and develop workforce plans aligned with firm growth goals
- Assess firm hiring needs and support onboarding of new team members
Employee Relations & Culture
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture consistent with MPB's values and 100-year legacy
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers on HR matters, employee relations issues, and conflict resolution
- Conduct stay interviews and exit interviews; analyze trends and recommend proactive improvements
- Champion change management efforts as the firm evolves and grows
Performance Management & Development
- Oversee the annual performance review process
- Collaborate with department heads to design career paths and development plans for staff at all levels
- Support the firm's commitment to continuing professional education (CPE) and CPA licensure programs
- Oversee the firm’s coaching program for professional staff
- Assist with staff development and utilization planning in coordination with firm leadership
Compensation, Benefits & Compliance
- Administer and continuously evaluate compensation structures and benefit programs to remain competitive in the market
- Administer MPB’s 401(k) plan, including enrollment, compliance, coordination with plan providers, and support the annual plan audit
- Ensure firm-wide compliance with all federal, state (Pennsylvania), and local employment laws and regulations
- Maintain and update the employee handbook, HR policies, and related documentation
- Oversee Employee Navigator platform and HR reporting; provide data-driven insights to leadership
Strategic HR Leadership
- Serve as a key member of the firm's leadership team, contributing an HR perspective to strategic decisions
- Lead and facilitate MPB’s HR Committee, coordinating agenda, communication, and follow through on initiatives
- Lead or support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
- Support ongoing operational initiatives as the firm continues to grow
Qualifications
Experience
- 7 years of progressive HR experience, including at least 3 years in an HR leadership or management role
- Strong background in public accounting, professional services, or a multi-office environment preferred
Skills
- Strong knowledge of federal and Pennsylvania employment law and HR best practices
- Demonstrated experience with full-cycle recruiting, performance management, and employee relations
- Understanding of CPA firm culture, busy seasons, and CPE/licensure processes is a strong plus
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Advanced analytical capabilities and ability to transform HR data into actionable insights for leadership
- Proficiency in HRIS platforms and MS Office Suite
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required
- Master's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field preferred
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred
Work Environment
MPB operates with offices in Erie, Franklin, Grove City, Meadville, and Titusville, Pennsylvania. This position is full-time and in-office. Some travel among the firm's five offices is required.
