Performs responsible work in the daily care, feeding, cleaning, and handling of animals housed at the McDowell County Animal Shelter. Work includes maintaining a clean and sanitary environment, assisting the public with adoptions and animal intake, and supporting animal control and shelter operations. Employee must exercise compassion, patience, and sound judgment when working with animals and the public.
An employee in this class is responsible for ensuring the humane treatment and care of all animals within the shelter. Duties involve routine kennel maintenance, monitoring animal health and behavior, assisting with intake and adoption processes, and interacting with citizens. Work may involve exposure to aggressive or frightened animals and requires adherence to safety protocols. Work is performed under regular supervision.
- Provides daily care for animals including feeding, watering, and monitoring overall health and behavior.
- Cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, and shelter facilities in accordance with established sanitation standards.
- Assists with the intake of animals, including documenting information, scanning for microchips, and placing animals appropriately.
- Assists the public with animal adoptions, redemptions, and general inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
- Observes animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral concerns and reports findings to supervisor or veterinary staff.
- Assists with euthanasia procedures as required, in accordance with state laws and departmental policy (may include handling and preparation).
- Maintains accurate records related to animal care, intake, and disposition.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding animal care and shelter operations.
- Handles animals safely, including aggressive or difficult animals, using proper restraint techniques.
- Assists with laundry, dishwashing, and general upkeep of shelter equipment and supplies.
- Participates in cleaning and maintaining outdoor runs and exercise areas.
- May assist Animal Control Officers as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of animal care, handling, and behavior.
- Ability to recognize signs of illness or distress in animals.
- Ability to safely and humanely handle a variety of animals, including those that may be aggressive or frightened.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to established procedures.
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards.
- Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public and coworkers.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience working with animals preferred (animal shelter, veterinary clinic, kennel, or farm setting).
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Special Requirements
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain Euthanasia Technician Certification within a specified timeframe (if required by role).
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts as needed.
- Pre-employment drug screening and background check required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
- Ability to work in environments with noise, odors, and exposure to cleaning chemicals.
- Exposure to animal dander, waste, and potential zoonotic diseases.
