Position Overview
Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in animal care and cleaning of premises in animal control operations; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor.
** WEEKEND WORK IS ESSENTIAL IN THIS POSITION **
Duties and Responsibilities
- Feeds, waters and provides basic care for animals in the shelter.
- Follows a sanitation schedule each day and uses the proper chemicals and techniques to effectively clean and sanitize the animals' kennels and enclosures in the shelter.
- Maintains organization of equipment and supplies in the feed room, wash room, and kennels.
- Provides educational information to the general public regarding animals adopted from the ARC.
- Observes the condition of animals in the shelter and reports suspected illness or injuries of animals to the supervisor.
- Assists the Animal Control Officers when needed with handling and restraint of animals for vaccinations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or its equivalent, with no required experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of small animal care and behavior.
- Knowledge of how diseases and contaminants spread and how to contain an outbreak of illness.
- Knowledge of cleaning agents and chemicals.
- Skill in handling animals; skill in cleaning and general custodial duties.
- Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public.
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow written instructions
