Position Summary
McCormick Taylor has an immediate opening for an Environmental Scientist with a Bachelor's in Environmental Science or related field and 3-7 years' experience. The successful candidate will perform the role of an Environmental Scientist supporting transportation and restoration projects. We are seeking an individual who can work with a team, handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work well in a hybrid office environment. Strong written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to organize is required. Previous experience collaborating with team members virtually is preferred. The candidate will be expected to report to McCormick Taylor’s office in Baltimore, MD, a minimum of one to three days per week, or at offsite locations related to field work.
The role would entail supporting the project team in obtaining local, state and federal permits/approvals for local and state clients (JPAs, Water Appropriations Permits, etc). Experience conducting resource assessments and preparing environmental documentation (state and federal) for projects is required. Experience with transportation, MS4, environmental studies/analysis, wetland delineation, forest stand delineation, and local permitting (VA/MD/DE/NJ/PA) is preferred. Occasional field work is required as part of the position. Experience providing oversight of construction projects is not required but preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Assist and begin to lead natural resources delineations/assessments (e.g. wetland delineation, forest stand delineation, etc.) efforts
- Assist technical staff with the following:
- Support resource assessment, including field work (e.g., plant identification, RTE surveys, geomorphological surveys, water quality data collection, and watershed assessments), data collection, and report development.
- Support local, state and federal permitting efforts for various infrastructure project types.
- Prepare written documentation including meeting minutes, standard operating procedures, white papers, memos, and technical reports.
- Support site development design plan review, including constructability, and design coordination.
- Support environmental compliance assessments and implement follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Begin to lead project tasks, including document development, field work and agency/client coordination.
- Develop an understanding of state and federal environmental regulations.
- Attend project meetings and support presentations on specific projects/concepts.
- Successfully complete projects within allotted time frame and budget.
- Support with client, sub-consultant, and in-house staff coordination.
- Plan, organize, and effectively utilize resources and materials.
- Anticipate and identify conflicts/issues in project/task schedules and work with the team to resolve.
- When needed, monitor work of sub-consultants to ensure completion of work on time, including technical review of their work.
- When applicable, provide Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) reviews of technical reports or documents prepared by others.
- Familiarity with NPDES MS4 programs is beneficial but not required.
- Enhance expertise through continued learning.
- Actively participate in professional and/or technical organizations (WPIT or PWS preferred).
- Make confident and timely decisions.
