About the Role:

The RN Wound Care position is a specialized nursing role focused on the comprehensive assessment, treatment, and management of patients with acute and chronic wounds. The primary goal is to promote optimal healing outcomes through evidence-based wound care practices, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This role involves developing individualized care plans, monitoring wound progress, and adjusting treatments as necessary to prevent complications such as infections or delayed healing. The RN Wound Care nurse serves as a key resource for patients, families, and healthcare teams, ensuring that wound care protocols are followed and that patients receive compassionate, high-quality care. Ultimately, this position contributes significantly to improving patient quality of life and reducing healthcare costs associated with wound-related complications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of wound care principles, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop care plans.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in nursing, preferably with exposure to wound care or related specialties.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Wound Care (e.g., Certified Wound Care Nurse - CWCN or Wound Care Certified - WCC).
  • Experience with advanced wound care technologies and products.
  • Experience working in outpatient, home health, or long-term care settings focused on wound management.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT).

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough wound assessments including size, depth, tissue type, and signs of infection or complications.
  • Develop and implement individualized wound care plans based on clinical guidelines and patient needs.
  • Perform wound treatments such as debridement, dressing changes, and application of advanced wound care products.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on wound care techniques, prevention strategies, and lifestyle modifications to support healing.
  • Collaborate with physicians, physical therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive care.
  • Document wound status, treatment interventions, and patient progress accurately in medical records.
  • Monitor and evaluate treatment effectiveness, making adjustments as necessary to optimize healing outcomes.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control standards and safety protocols during all wound care procedures.

Skills:

The RN Wound Care nurse utilizes clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate wound characteristics and patient conditions, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Strong communication skills are essential for educating patients and collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities enable the nurse to adapt treatment plans based on wound healing progress and emerging complications.
