Accountant

Mathison | Mathison Architects is a 19-person design firm based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, working across nearly all typologies of architecture and interiors projects throughout the Midwest and beyond. We are looking for a reliable, detail-oriented person to take over the day-to-day financial coordination of the firm.

This is a hands-on role as an integral member of our team. You’ll work closely with our retiring controller during a structured transition, and then take the lead on these responsibilities. We’re a small, collegial office and value someone who approaches their work with care, clarity, and sound judgment, and who communicates openly as part of the team.

What you’ll work on:
    Process payroll and fund 401k contributions
    Record all transactions across bank accounts, credit cards, and loans
    Manage invoicing and bill payment
    Monitor the accounting inbox and respond as needed
    File monthly and annual sales tax returns
    Prepare 1099s
    Prepare the annual workers’ comp audit
    Collect W9s & worker comp certificates from subcontractors
    Reimburse employee expenses
    Prepare compensation package reports for employees
    Onboard new employees to time tracking, payroll systems and benefits
    Pay quarterly estimates
    Attend a monthly meeting to review prior-month financials with firm leadership
    Serve as the liaison with our CPA
    Monitor all online accounts for fraud
    File invoices on server
 

What we are looking for:
○    Experience in small-business accounting or bookkeeping, ideally in a professional services context
○    Comfort with payroll processing and basic financial reporting
○    Organized, self-directed, and precise

○    At least 3 years experience QuickBooks Online;

○    Someone who can work with a small team and doesn’t need a lot of hand-holding once oriented
 

We are open to this being a part-time staff position and we are flexible on hours. Compensation is commensurate with experience. Most work will be performed in our downtown Grand Rapids office, but some can be done remotely.
