Accounting Manager

Matern Staffing is hiring an Accounting Manager for a mission-driven nonprofit organization in Fredericksburg, VA. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced accounting leader who excels at building efficient systems, maintaining accurate financial operations, and ensuring day-to-day processes run smoothly.

As Accounting Manager, you’ll take the lead in overseeing the full scope of the organization’s accounting functions—keeping things running seamlessly while supporting compliance, reporting, and planning. This role is ideal for someone who combines technical strength with a steady, detail-oriented approach to team leadership.

While candidates from all locations will be considered, preference will be given to those local to the Fredericksburg area who understand the community our client serves.

This is a direct hire position with benefits listed below.

Schedule: Hybrid: mostly remote, with in-person meetings

Salary: $90,000-$110,000/yr

What You’ll Do:

• Oversee and manage daily accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and general ledger maintenance
• Ensure timely processing of payments, accurate recording of revenue, and compliance with donor restrictions and grant terms
• Support annual budget development and provide ongoing financial forecasting and analysis to guide senior management decisions
• Monitor financial performance, oversee cash flow to ensure operational liquidity, and adjust forecasts as needed
• Prepare accurate, timely financial statements and grantor reports in compliance with accounting standards and nonprofit regulations
• Maintain compliance with GAAP, FASB, nonprofit financial regulations, and tax filing requirements, including IRS Form 990
• Lead the annual audit process, addressing any findings and collaborating with external auditors
• Identify and implement process improvements and oversee financial system maintenance and upgrades

What You’ll Need:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required)
• 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
• Proven experience in nonprofit financial management and audit coordination
• Proficiency in financial software (e.g., SAGE Intacct, Martus) and Microsoft Office Suite
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• CPA or equivalent certification
• Experience with grants management and financial systems integration
