Title of Job: Laboratory Assistant
Status/FLSA Status: FT/Non-Exempt
Reports to: Director of Laboratory Services
Location: Mason District Hospital, Havana, IL

Primary Function:
The Laboratory Assistant will perform duties necessary for specimen collection, labeling, and processing for Laboratory Analysis. Additional duties will include CLIA waived testing to assist the Laboratory operation.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain the MDH mission statement to provide exceptional customer service.
- Perform phlebotomy as required to operate Laboratory.
- Telephone communications as needed for outpatient and laboratory services.
- Be familiar with Laboratory test requirements including how to find Reference Laboratory procedures.
- Adapt as necessary to schedules and assignments as needed to operate the Laboratory on a 24/7 basis.
- Perform Drug Screen Collections to include DOT and Non-DOT
- Computer skills necessary to use Hospital LIS, Microsoft Office 365, and TruBridge
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, interact positively with staff and other departments, and uphold hospital policies.
- Maintain HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
- Sequencing and ordering of specimens provided to the Laboratory by remote clinics (HMA. Mason City, Manito, Specialty Clinic, Home Health, etc.)
- Complete Continuing Education as assigned by MDH and as needed for Professional Development
- Perform any CLIA waived testing as needed in the Laboratory.
- Assist in preparation of specimens including specific requirements (temperature, light, time, etc.) including operation of centrifuge.
- Perform other duties activities which may be required by employer to operate the Laboratory.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent GED.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Illinois.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information with integrity.
- Computer skills necessary to use hospital LIS.
- Ability to learn and use Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
- The ability to assume responsibilities and work independently with minimum supervision is required.

Physical demands for this position include the ability to sit regularly, use hands and fingers, talk, and hear. This position requires standing, walking, reaching, crouching, stooping/kneeling. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and or patients. Personal Protective Equipment will need to be worn for Job Duties. Required use of tools or equipment is essential. Work is typically performed in an office but operations in the Emergency Room may expose the employee to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery, contagious or infectious agents. Vision requirements for this position include near vision and must be able to distinguish between shades of color and utilize sense of smell.
