Primary Function: The Hospital Shuttle Driver plays a vital role in ensuring safe, timely, and compassionate non-emergency transportation for patients between their homes and the hospital campus. This position includes hands-on driving responsibilities and may consist of administrative coordination duties, such as scheduling and confirming patient pick-ups and drop-offs.
Position Summary:
The Hospital Transport Van Driver & Patient Transport Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring safe, timely, and compassionate non-emergency transportation for patients between their homes and the hospital campus. This dual-role position includes both hands-on driving responsibilities and administrative coordination duties, such as scheduling and confirming patient pick-ups and drop-offs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Driving & Transportation:
- Operate a hospital-provided transport van to pick up patients from their residences and transport them to the hospital campus and back.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of patients during transport, including assisting patients with limited mobility.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, ensuring the van is clean, fueled, and in safe operating condition.
- Adhere to all traffic laws and hospital safety protocols.
- Maintain timely pick-up and drop-off schedules.
- Assist patients in and out of the vehicle as needed; ensure proper use of wheelchair lifts or securement systems.
Additional Duties:
- Coordinate transportation appointments with patients, hospital departments, and caregivers.
- Maintain a daily log of scheduled trips, completed rides, and any changes or delays.
- Communicate effectively with hospital staff, ensuring seamless transitions for patients between transport and care.
- Use scheduling software or spreadsheets to track and update patient transport requests.
- Monitor and adjust daily transport schedules as needed to accommodate delays, cancellations, or emergencies.
Customer Service & Communication:
- Serve as a friendly and compassionate point of contact for patients and their families.
- Respond to phone calls or messages related to scheduling or transportation concerns.
- Provide excellent customer service and ensure a positive experience for all patients during transport.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (CDL may be required depending on local regulations or vehicle size).
- CPR/First Aid certification (preferred or required within 3 months of hire).
- Prior experience in patient transport, healthcare, or customer service preferred.
- Ability to operate a wheelchair-accessible van and assist patients with mobility needs.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer use, including email and scheduling tools.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, drive, and focus for extended periods.
- Able to lift or assist patients safely, including the operation of wheelchair lifts or mobility devices.
- Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and navigating traffic safely.
