The Prince George’s County Planning Department of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is seeking a Planning Technician I to join our Planning Information Services team. This position offers an opportunity to support land use planning that shapes the physical development of one of Maryland’s largest and most diverse counties. Prince George’s County is the second most populous county in Maryland, with approximately 900,000 residents. The County is home to major institutions and destinations, including the University of Maryland at College Park, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Joint Base Andrews, Northwest Stadium, and National Harbor. Under general supervision, the Planning Technician I provides technical and administrative support to the planning function. This role plays an important part in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of development application reviews and customer service activities. Some work may involve confidential or sensitive information.

Duties

As an individual contributor, your work will have a meaningful impact on the effectiveness and quality of planning support provided by the Department. Important duties include:

  • Reviewing development applications for accuracy and completeness and processing applications in accordance with procedural requirements
  • Identifying incomplete or unacceptable applications and referring questionable cases to a supervisor
  • Distributing applications to appropriate review sections and agencies within established timeframes
  • Verifying information using computerized databases and documents; identifying and locating missing information as needed
  • Collecting and organizing data from computerized permit systems and other sources
  • Keeping codes and ordinances current and staying informed of policy changes
  • Maintaining computerized and manual records
  • Responding to customer inquiries in person, by phone, and by email
  • Documenting customer inquiries and preparing permit review comment sheets
  • Collect, record, and assist with depositing fees for copies, applications, and publications
  • Develop knowledge of county geography, organization, maps, plans, and County codes and ordinances
  • Applying established procedures and standard solutions to recurring issues
  • Interacting with internal and external contacts to exchange routine and non-routine information
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of County ordinances governing zoning, subdivision, and related areas (typically acquired after employment in this position)
  • Skills and abilities in:
    • Using computer databases to enter and retrieve information
    • Preparing digital presentations
    • Using a variety of software for word processing, spreadsheets, map production, graphics, slide presentations, data entry, and tracking systems
    • Scanning and filing records
  • Ability to work accurately while providing customer service and responding to phone inquiries
  • Strong communication skills to assist the public with permit and application processes and code compliance
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal and external contacts in a professional, customer service-oriented manner
  • Proficiency with modern office software (such as Microsoft Office), enterprise and specialized systems, and office equipment, including printers, plotters, and point-of-sale machines
  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • One (1) year of experience with plan, permit and development application review.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total one (1) year.
Preferred Skills: Strong computer skills in the following Windows applications: Microsoft Access, Word, and Excel. GIS experience with ArcView is desirable but not required. Some experience in reviewing site plans, landscape plans, architectural plans, and subdivision plans. Experience in customer service-oriented environment is desired.

The M-NCPPC offers a competitive salary range of $39,117 to $69,276 per annum (salary is commensurate with education and experience) at the Planning Technician I level with excellent benefits including generous leave, extensive health coverage, deferred compensation plan, and employee pension plan.

The Prince George’s County Planning Department is conveniently located in Largo, Maryland, near Metro and I-495.
