Position Description
The basic jurisdiction of a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge is specified in Title 28, U.S.C. and explained in Title 11, U.S.C., as well as in 98 Stat. 344, Pub. L. 98-353, Title I, §120.

Qualifications
Applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
- Be a member in good standing of the Bar of the highest court of at least one state.
- Be competent to perform the duties of the office.
- Possess, and have a reputation for, integrity and good character.
- Possess, and have demonstrated, a commitment to equal justice under the law.
- Be of sound mental and physical health.
- Possess, and have demonstrated, outstanding legal ability and competence.
- Indicate by demeanor, character, and personality that one would exhibit judicial temperament if appointed.
- Not be related by blood or marriage to a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, a member of the Judicial Council of the Fourth Circuit, or a judge of the district court to be served.
- Have engaged in the active practice of law for at least five years.
