Job Summary
The Library Associate provides direct support to patrons at the North Berkeley Library. This position assists patrons in locating information, using library materials and technology. Core duties include circulation services, shelving, reader's advisory, and support for literacy programs and community events.
Scheduled Hours:
Position 1:
- Monday & Tuesday: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Every other Saturday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Position 2:
- Thursday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Saturday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Additional hours, up to 20 per week, may be available at other branches.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist patrons in finding library materials and information in print and online formats
- Provide reader's advisory services by recommending books based on interest and reading level
- Support patrons in the use of electronic resources, including eBooks and online databases
- Assist patrons with basic computer use, emailing, and word processing
- Help patrons access community and government resources and complete online applications (e.g., job applications)
- Assist with the use of library equipment, such as computers, printers, fax machines, and copiers
- Perform circulation tasks, including checking items in and out and shelving materials
- Support and participate in creative programming for children, teens, and adults
- Maintain a welcoming and helpful environment for all patrons
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred
- Experience in a customer service role and/or working with children preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in basic computer applications, including word processing and email
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Google Drive)
- Background check is required
Salary: $15.00 per hour
