What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Services Library Associate position at Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Library?
Join our library team as a Youth Services Library Assistant, where your enthusiasm and organizational skills will inspire young minds and foster a love of reading and learning. In this role, you will primarily support the delivery of engaging youth programs, provide exceptional customer service to our community, and supports daily circulation activities within the Martinsburg Public Library Youth Services Department. Your proactive approach will help create a welcoming environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and growth among our young patrons. Core duties include circulation services, shelving, reader’s advisory, and support for literacy programs and community events, including the annual Summer Reading Program, Comic Con, and daily programming for patrons birth–18. This position includes cross-training to adult services to assist in coverage of circulation desk during planned programming or due to staff absence, as well as assistance at branch libraries on an as-needed basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Check library materials in and out using the circulation system.
- Greet patrons and provide excellent customer service at all times.
- Provides basic reference and reader’s advisory assistance to Children’s and Young Adult Department visitors.
- Assist with reading programs and related projects from birth–18.
- Register patrons for library cards and update account information.
- Shelve materials accurately and maintain orderly collections.
- Process and manage patron holds, requests, and inter-branch transfers.
- Collaborate with staff to develop creative, engaging youth programming.
- Ensures a safe environment for staff and patrons; Enforces patron code of behavior, documents incidents, and calls police when needed.
- Perform other general circulation or library support duties as assigned, such as craft programs and designing creative book displays.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's Degree preferred. High school diploma required.
- Minimum of two years of customer service experience.
- Experience working with children and teens.
- Reliable transportation required; willingness to travel to other Berkeley County branches to provide coverage as needed.
- Proficiency with computers, including Google Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Drive, etc.).
- Strong communication, organization, and customer service skills.
- Ability to take direction and work both independently and as a part of a team.
- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.
- The physical ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads.

Schedule & Compensation
There are two (2) part-time positions available with the following core schedules:
Position 1 (15 hours):
- Monday: 9:30AM - 7PM
- Tuesday: 4PM - 7PM
- Thursday: 4PM - 7PM
Position 2 (16 hours):
- Monday: 4PM - 7PM
- Tuesday: 4PM - 7PM
- Thursday: 4PM - 7PM
- Saturday: 9:30AM - 5PM
Shifts are primarily scheduled at the Martinsburg Public Library, but the right candidate will be willing and able to work at our branch libraries to cover staff absences as needed.
- Hourly Wage: $15.00
