Position Summary
The Children’s Library Associate provides friendly, efficient customer service and supports daily circulation activities within the Martinsburg Public Library Youth Services Department. This position includes working directly with children, teens, and their families while assisting in the delivery of library services and programs. Core duties include circulation services, shelving, reader’s advisory, and support for literacy programs and community events, including the annual Summer Reading Program, Comic Con, and daily programming for patrons birth–18. This position reports to the Youth Services Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Check library materials in and out using the circulation system.
- Greet patrons and provide excellent customer service at all times.
- Provides basic reference and reader’s advisory assistance to Children’s and Young Adult Department visitors.
- Assist with reading programs and related projects from birth–18.
- Register patrons for library cards and update account information.
- Shelve materials accurately and maintain orderly collections.
- Process and manage patron holds, requests, and inter-branch transfers.
- Collaborate with staff to develop creative, engaging youth programming.
- Ensures a safe environment for staff and patrons; Enforces patron code of behavior, documents incidents, and calls police when needed.
- Perform other general circulation or library support duties as assigned, such as craft programs and designing creative book displays.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's Degree preferred. High school diploma required.
- Minimum of two years of customer service experience.
- Experience working with children and teens.
- Reliable transportation required; willingness to travel to other Berkeley County branches to provide coverage as needed.
- Proficiency with computers, including Google Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Drive, etc.).
- Strong communication, organization, and customer service skills.
- Ability to take direction and work both independently and as a part of a team.
- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.
- The physical ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads.
This is a part-time position with the following core schedule:
- Monday: 4PM - 7PM
- Tuesday: 4PM - 7PM
- Thursday: 4PM - 7PM
- Saturday: 9:30AM - 5PM
Additional hours may be available at Martinsburg Public Library or other branch libraries, up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.
