On farms, the Farm Maintenance Helper assists with the repair, maintenance, and installation of farm equipment and agricultural systems, including water lines, feed lines, cool cells, heaters, livestock flooring, curtains, gates, and crates. Workers inspect and tend to machinery and components to ensure safe and efficient operation; use hand and power tools to adjust, connect or disconnect wiring, piping, and tubing; disassemble defective equipment; assist with repairs; and reassemble equipment to confirm proper functioning. They support skilled workers by holding tools, parts, or supplies, clean and lubricate equipment, and use hand and power tools to assemble and maintain farm structures. Workers are also responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting barns, equipment, and animal areas to maintain farm biosecurity.
Additional duties include landscaping, mowing, edging, trimming, and operating agricultural machinery such as tractors, spreaders, mulchers, and utility vehicles to haul and distribute compost or other materials. Workers may attach farm implements including plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors using bolts and hand tools. They will also monitor and maintain farm equipment by listening for malfunctions, making routine adjustments or minor repairs, and reporting major issues to supervisors.
