Job description:
The Garbage Truck Helper is responsible for assisting the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, or recycling.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Picks up solid waste and places it in the back of a rear load garbage truck on specified routes often done manually or by pushing the container to tipper.
· Lifts and carries trash bags, bulk items, and containers to the truck for disposal.
· Climbs onto and off the rear of truck step to load refuse, waste, and carts.
· Operates packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck.
· Ensures garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly; Containers maybe staged curbside, dockside, carryout, or require pullout to complete service.
· Notifies supervisor or dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards.
· Assists Driver in safely backing up the truck by directing the Driver from the ground.
· Reports any safety, accidents, customer service-related issues, property damage to supervisor and/or dispatch, immediately.
· Performs a variety of manual duties in the clean-up of scattered refuse; Cleans up the area around accidental waste spills and ensures customers containers are replaced properly.
- Courteously interacts with customers, dispatchers, and coworkers.

· Required to use motor coordination with arm, hand, finger, and leg dexterity.
· Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than 100 pounds frequently.
· Requires pushing, pulling, bending, twisting and lifting up to 75 lbs.
· Normal setting for this job is outdoors and/or riding in a monitored vehicle.
· Physically able to work 8 to 12 hours in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, and rain).
· Ability to ride on the outside of the truck while servicing residential customers in low mile per hour areas.
