What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Professional position at Martin Electric?
Martin Electric is an 85 year electrical contractor building its next generation. We take on complex, fast-moving commercial and industrial work where execution matters. Our clients count on us to say, “Don’t worry. We’ve got it.” and then deliver.
The Seat
You are a coach, not an enforcer. You own safety at Martin Electric — all of it.You build, run and continuously improve the program that prevents accidents before they happen. You are the expert leadership and Foremen rely on — you tell us what we need, not the other way around.
You also do the work: in the field every week supporting Foremen on site-specific safety plans, training crews, connecting people to support and leading the response when someone gets hurt. You also own our clients’ trust: through strong field presence, clear communication and integrity, they rely on our safety expertise and know we are proactive, we care and we always put people before profits.
Responsibilities
- Build, implement and continuously improve the company safety program, policies and procedures.
- Partner with PMs and Foremen on site-specific safety plans and clean, organized, safe jobsites.
- Conduct weekly management safety observations and take part in client site safety meetings.
- Deliver monthly toolbox talks on every active site, plus in-house trainings as requested.
- Coordinate First Aid/CPR/AED and Safety Week training with HR; keep the training matrix current.
- Lead every injury case — incident reporting, root cause analysis for incidents and near-misses, and workers’ comp with HR.
- Inspect vehicles, fire extinguishers and safety equipment, and see corrective actions through.
- Keep PPE, safety binders, jobsite whiteboards and exit/egress plans stocked and current.
- Manage client safety portals (e.g., ComplyWorks) and support jobsite badging and certifications.
WHAT WINNING LOOKS LIKE… Crews raise hazards and near-misses on their own because they trust you, not fear you. Foremen see you as a partner, and the program keeps getting better. Clients trust us, rely on us, and turn to us when in need. Zero incidents every day.
Then think about how people go home. Not just unhurt — proud of what they built and knowing someone on the team has their back when work or life gets heavy.
WHO THRIVES HERE
Find a Way — Shortages and late shipments are real. Excuses are optional. You find another source and keep work moving.
Be Genuine — Say what you see, explain the why and stop the work when you have to — with respect, not a write-up.
Stay Hungry & Humble — Nobody is above the work. You are eager to learn and willing to jump in.
We’re a Team — Challenge directly. Care deeply. You coach people up, not call them out.
Committed to Excellence — Raise the standard. One missed hazard or certification can stop a job — or hurt someone.
Qualifications
- Minimum OSHA 500 certification; CHST, ASP or CSP strongly preferred.
- 5 years in construction safety and 10 years in the construction industry; mechanical or electrical trade experience preferred.
- Proficiency in OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926).
- Strong experience and proficiency in NFPA 70E, LOTO, fall protection, confined space and high-hazard safety.
- Proven track record building site-specific safety plans and leading incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Confidence leading toolbox talks and training in front of field crews.
- Self-directed expertise and exceptional organization — you set the agenda, no micromanaging required.
- A coach’s mindset — you build people up and teach the why, not just the rule.
- The emotional intelligence to notice when someone is struggling and point them to support.
- Fluency with Microsoft Office and client compliance portals.
- Degree in occupational safety or a related field — or equivalent field experience.
- Valid driver’s license; ability to travel between sites and respond after hours.
THIS ROLE MAY NOT BE FOR YOU IF… You think safety means walking sites, checking boxes and bringing donuts; you need to be told what to do; or you see safety as catching people doing something wrong. If owning a program end to end and making people better does not energize you, this is probably not your seat.
