High School Drama Production Director

 

Purpose of the Position
The High School Drama Production Director is responsible for planning, directing, and producing one major theatrical production each semester. This position provides students with meaningful opportunities to develop theatrical performance and technical production skills while fostering creativity, collaboration, responsibility, and a positive performance culture. The director oversees all aspects of production, including auditions, rehearsals, technical coordination, and performances, while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and educational experience for participating students.

 

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, direct, and produce two theatrical productions annually, with one production presented each semester.

  • Select appropriate productions in collaboration with school administration, ensuring alignment with district policies, student interests, available resources, and educational goals.

  • Organize and conduct auditions, casting, rehearsals, and performances.

  • Develop and implement rehearsal schedules that maximize student learning while respecting academic commitments.

  • Supervise students in all aspects of theatrical production, including acting, stage management, set construction, lighting, sound, costumes, props, makeup, publicity, and front-of-house operations, as appropriate.

  • Collaborate with school staff, volunteers, parents, and community partners to support successful productions.

  • Coordinate production logistics, including performance schedules, facility use, technical needs, and equipment.

  • Maintain a safe and positive rehearsal and performance environment that promotes teamwork, professionalism, creativity, and mutual respect.

  • Mentor beginning participants while providing advanced opportunities and leadership experiences for returning students.

  • Encourage students' artistic growth through constructive feedback, goal setting, and reflection throughout the production process.

  • Develop and manage production budgets in accordance with district procedures.

  • Coordinate fundraising activities, ticket sales, and promotional efforts, as approved by the school and district.

  • Attend and supervise rehearsals, performances, technical rehearsals, workshops, festivals, competitions, and other theatre-related events as appropriate.

  • Promote student participation in theatre festivals, Thespian activities, and other educational performance opportunities when applicable.

  • Maintain effective communication with students, families, administration, and staff regarding production expectations, schedules, and events.

  • Perform other duties related to the successful operation of the school's theatre production program as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theatre production, directing, and stage management.

  • Ability to organize, motivate, and supervise students in a collaborative environment.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

  • Experience with theatrical performance and/or technical theatre preferred.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for rehearsals, performances, and special events.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, families, and community members.

 

This is an extra duty responsibility and the stipend listed will be paid based on candidate's experience and will be issued per semester when a production is scheduled.

Salary Column B- Extra Duty

$1,912-$4,446 per semester

 

Physical Requirements

Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to perform assigned duties; sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files and materials, and lifting light objects. Strength: Sedentary/Medium – Exert force to 10-25 lbs. frequently, and up to 10 lbs. constantly or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.
