Painters perform skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of interior and exterior surfaces (e.g., wood, plaster, drywall, steel, concrete, and brick), on all University building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment following recognized procedures and techniques of the painting trade and using paint brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers, sandpaper, sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, and related painting tools. The Painter also practices preventive maintenance of painting tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the painting trade.

- Performs skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of all building structures, parking lots, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment.
- Prepares surfaces for painting using sandpaper, power sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, scrappers, paint removers and chemicals, filling nail holes, cracks, or joints with putty, plaster or other fillers.
- Patches and finishes drywall and other similar surfaces.
- Applies paints, stains, varnishes, enamel, or lacquer using paint brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers, and related tools common to the painting trade.
- Proficient with hand tools. Skilled in the application of finishes (staining and spraying of finishes) to achieve high quality results.
- Covers items with protective cloths, covering floors with cloths or tarpaulins, taping woodwork, facings, and decorative trims in a manner that prevents damage.
- Restores painting work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing scaffolding, painting cloths, tarpaulins, and masking tape used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and cleaning any paint splatters from surfaces, furniture or equipment.
- Moving furniture/items such as desks, tables, chairs, vanities, display cases, hutches, bookshelves as well as other items utilizing furniture mover equipment where necessary in preparation for work and returns items to original location upon completion.
- Complies with federal regulations by following policies, laws, and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials common to painting.
- Ability to read color charts and interpret drawings and sketches.
- Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned.
- Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials.
