What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dental Public Health Specialist-Faculty position at Marquette University and Careers?
The Dental Public Health Specialist / Faculty member will support the school’s externship, community engagement, and population oral health missions through field-based oversight, faculty calibration, teaching, interprofessional education (IPE), community-based activities, oral health promotion, and data-driven program evaluation.
This position will work in close collaboration with the Director of the Externship Program, while maintaining distinct responsibilities focused on implementation, quality assurance, faculty development, and evaluation rather than program administration or strategic oversight.
Approximately 60% of effort will be field based, with regular travel to externship and community sites.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Work with department leadership to design and maintain an externship program that meets the school’s educational goals and accreditation requirements.
2. Build and sustain partnerships with dental practices, hospitals, FQHCs, community clinics, and other sites to provide strong externship opportunities for students.
3. Develop and update externship guidelines, policies, procedures, and assessment tools, and ensure they are used consistently across all sites.
4. Support clinical and community-based interprofessional education (IPE) experiences that address social determinants of health.
5. Lead student orientations and preparatory sessions and stay in regular contact with students throughout their externships.
6. Monitor student progress, provide support, and address concerns related to performance, professionalism, or site-related issues.
7. Review and assess externship sites to ensure they meet standards for clinical education, patient care, and safety.
8. Approve and calibrate preceptors and provide ongoing communication to support consistent supervision and evaluation.
9. Evaluate externship sites and student performance through assessments, feedback, and follow-up quality improvement efforts.
10. Maintain required documentation and records to ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards.
11. Contribute to teaching and mentoring through lectures, seminars, and involvement in community dentistry, public health, and interprofessional education activities.
12. Participate in community oral health programs, including field visits, mobile or school-based initiatives, and public health outreach, while strengthening relationships with community partners and interprofessional teams.

Qualified applicants must have:
- DDS/DMD from a US or Canadian dental school recognized by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation or a comparable foreign degree.
- Master of Science (MS) in Dental Public Health (required).
- Must be ABDPH-eligible (successful completion of accredited residency or eligibility pathway).
- Demonstrated experience or interest in population-level oral health programs.
- Valid dental license in some state or jurisdiction and be eligible for a regular or faculty license in the State of Wisconsin.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently.
