Position Summary
The Shop and Equipment Yard Manager is responsible for managing the company’s construction equipment fleet, yard operations, tools and equipment, construction materials, and maintenance shop. This position ensures that all vehicles, tools, equipment, and machinery are well maintained, properly tracked, and safely dispatched to projects.
The manager supervises shop and yard staff, coordinates equipment logistics, and supports field operations by keeping projects supplied with reliable equipment, material, and tools.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance and Management
- Plan, schedule, and oversee maintenance and repairs for all equipment, trucks, and small tools.
- Manage preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
- Maintain detailed service and inspection records for all company assets.
- Coordinate with field superintendents and project managers to schedule equipment mobilization and demobilization.
- Review and approve repair estimates, parts orders, and vendor invoices.
- Deliver materials, tools, and equipment to construction jobsites and company events.
Yard & Shop Operations
- Oversee daily shop and yard activities including equipment dispatch, returns, and storage.
- Ensure proper tagging, inspection, and documentation of all assets entering or leaving the yard.
- Maintain an organized shop and yard layout for safe and efficient traffic flow.
- Fueling, washing, and staging of equipment for jobsite delivery.
- Track small tools and consumables inventory and ensure timely replenishment.
Personnel Management
- Supervise, train, and evaluate shop and yard personnel.
- Schedule workloads and assign priorities to meet operational demands.
- Promote teamwork, safety, and professional conduct among staff.
Safety and Compliance
- Enforce compliance with OSHA, DOT, and environmental regulations.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and inspections of shop and yard areas.
- Maintain documentation for operator certifications and equipment safety programs.
Budget and Reporting
- Prepare and manage annual shop and equipment maintenance budgets.
- Track equipment utilization, operating costs, and downtime metrics.
- Assist in capital equipment planning and make recommendations for purchases or disposals.
- Issue invoices for tools, materials, and equipment for projects.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- 5–7 years of experience in construction equipment maintenance and logistics.
- 2–3 years of experience in construction tools and materials.
- 2–3 years of supervisory experience in a shop or fleet environment.
- 2–5 years of experience driving large commercial trucks (e.g., Ford F-650).
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to lift up to 80 lbs.
- Valid Certified Forklift Operator card.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of heavy construction equipment systems.
- Experience with fleet management, inventory, or maintenance tracking software.

Licenses / Certifications
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).

Working Conditions
- Primarily based at the company’s main yard and maintenance facility.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
