Paper Mill Manager
Overview
The Paper Mill Manager is the senior leader responsible for the entire operation of the facility. This role ensures manufacturing efficiency, meets ambitious production and quality targets, and maintains a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement. The Manager is accountable for all operational, financial, technical, and human resource activities within the mill.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Operations Management
- Operational Oversight: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the entire paper mill, ensuring seamless, efficient, and cost-effective production schedules are executed.
- Production Planning: Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive production plans to ensure maximum output, adherence to schedules, and consistently meeting production goals and maintaining the highest quality standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Drive a culture of continuous improvement, utilizing technical skills to recognize and implement advancements in automation and technology to optimize processes and remain competitive.
- Industry Trends: Stay up-to-date with industry trends and technologies relevant to paper manufacturing to maintain a competitive advantage.
Financial and Administrative Accountability
- Financial Management: Take full ownership of the mill's finances, including budgeting, forecasting, and managing expenses to ensure the facility operates within budget and achieves financial objectives.
- Asset Management: Ensure the long-term physical condition and reliability of the paper mill equipment through effective planning for maintenance and capital projects.
- Compliance: Ensure the mill maintains strict compliance with all company policies, collective bargaining agreements, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., environmental, OSHA).
Staff Management and Development
- Staff Supervision: Supervise and lead all mill staff, including machine operators, maintenance workers, and office personnel, providing effective coaching, guidance, and support.
- Employee Relations: Demonstrate strong employee relations skills within a diverse workforce, ensuring fair practices and fostering a positive work environment.
- Training and Development: Develop and maintain a comprehensive training program for all personnel to ensure skills are current and to maximize workforce effectiveness.
Safety, Health, and Environmental Stewardship
- Safety Leadership: Be the champion for the mill's safety policies, implementing safety and sustainability policies and promoting a culture of safety and environmental responsibility across all departments.
- Stakeholder Relations: Establish and maintain positive relationships with customers, suppliers, and other key stakeholders in the community and the industry.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Paper Science, Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical), Business Management, or a related field. An advanced degree (MBA) is a plus.
- Experience: 10 years of progressive experience in paper manufacturing or a continuous process industry, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership or management role overseeing multiple departments.
- Skills:
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated financial acumen (budgeting, P&L management).
- Proven technical skills related to paper machine operations and converting equipment.
- Experience managing in a union environment is highly desirable.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Ability to work in a paper mill environment, including exposure to heat, noise, dust, chemicals, and varying temperatures.
- Requires the ability to frequently walk the production floor and climb stairs/ladders.
- Willingness to be on-call 24/7 to manage critical operational and safety emergencies.
