Position Overview
As a Tool Designer, you will be the bridge between initial product concepts and manufacturing execution. You will design, develop, and optimize a wide variety of manufacturing tools, including jigs, fixtures, dies, molds, and cutting tools. Your expertise will directly impact production efficiency and product quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Develop: Create detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings for complex tooling, fixtures, gages, and molds using SolidWorks.
- Collaborate: Work closely with manufacturing, tool makers, and production staff to review product designs for manufacturability and resolve tooling-related issues.
- Optimize & Improve: Evaluate existing tooling performance, identify bottlenecks, and redesign tools to reduce cycle times, minimize waste, and improve part quality.
- Standardize: Ensure all designs comply with company standards, and safety guidelines.
- Vendor Liaison: Source components and collaborate with external tool-and-die shops to oversee the fabrication and prototyping of your designs.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent hands-on experience in tool-and-die making).
- Experience: 2-5 years of proven experience in mechanical tool design within a manufacturing environment.
- CAD Expertise: Advanced proficiency in Solidworks.(Knowledge of Autocad for legacy designs would be helpful.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles, machining processes (CNC, EDM, milling, turning), and material selection (metals, plastics, alloys).
- Problem Solving: Excellent analytical skills with a knack for diagnosing mechanical issues and finding creative solutions.
