The mission for the counselors of the Mansfield City Schools is to provide high quality, comprehensive school counseling services to all students. Our programs are designed to help all students develop and enhance their academic, social, career, and personal strengths in order to become responsible and productive citizens. There is a commitment to individual uniqueness and the maximum development of human potential.

Through the skillful use of strategic, timely, and personal interventions, counselors should customize educational experiences in order to enhance capabilities, close achievement gaps among high and low performing groups, and support the concept of students making positive choices regarding their educational pathway with college and career connections.

Ohio Standards for School Counselors

The Mansfield City Schools embrace, ratify, and validate the Ohio Standards for School Counselors as follows:

  • Comprehensive School Counseling Program Plan School counselors collaboratively envision a plan for a comprehensive school counseling program that is developmental, preventative and responsive, and in alignment with the school's goals and mission.
  • Direct Services for Academic, Career and Social/Emotional Development School counselors develop a curriculum, offer individual student planning and deliver responsive services in order to assist students in developing and applying knowledge, skills and mindsets for academic, career and social/emotional development.
  • Indirect Services: Partnerships and Referrals School counselors collaborate and consult with school personnel, parents/guardians, community partners and agencies/organizations to coordinate support for all students.
  • Evaluation and Data School counselors collaboratively engage in a cycle of continuous improvement using data to identify needs, plan and implement programs, evaluate impact and adjust accordingly.
  • Leadership and Advocacy School counselors lead school efforts and advocate for policies and practices that support an equitable, safe, inclusive and positive learning environment for all students.
  • Professional Responsibility, Knowledge and Growth School counselors adhere to the ethical standards of the profession, engage in ongoing professional learning and refine their work through reflection.

Qualifications Profile

  • Valid Ohio School Counselor Certificate/License.
  • Three years teaching experience
  • Demonstrates talent in successful teaching as reflected in student performance-based and standardized assessments.
  • Demonstrates a problem-solving attitude.
  • Believes and models the belief that all students can learn.
  • Demonstrates excellent attendance and recognizes the connection of outstanding attendance to the relevance, rigor, and cycle of teaching and learning.
  • Alternative qualifications, separate from the above, deemed appropriate by the Superintendent

Reports to: Building Principal, Superintendent/Designee

Essential Functions

  • Provide classroom Guidance 4-6 as assigned.
  • Create, teach, and evaluate developmentally appropriate curriculum which reflects and advances the cause of personal/social/emotional well-being of students.
  • Create, teacher, and evaluate developmentally appropriate curriculum which promotes career/occupational choices and information.
  • Teach guidance units with students that will promote coping skills and appropriate positive mental health.
  • Organize and effectively facilitate small group counseling sessions which meet the needs of students as expressed by principals, teachers, parents, and students.
  • Provide individual Counseling (as determined by student need)
  • Provide additional student support services to include parent communication and conferencing, staff consultation, and community health referrals. No community health referral services or programs should be utilized as a substitute for services provided by in-house guidance counselors.
  • Engage in professional development deigned to improve professional skills in all facets of counseling.

Performance Responsibilities

Mansfield City Schools Guidance Counselors shall:

  • Work extensively with students to prepare students for college and career goals following High School.
  • Utilize a positive spirit and drive.
  • Demonstrate exceptional motivation to promote success for each and every student, each and every day.
  • Develop positive relationships with students that allow them to know each student. The presence of strong relationships between students and teachers builds a trust that positively impacts learning. Relationships are the basis for providing excellent services.
  • Believe in the ability of all students to learn. Excellent counselors will see the potential in his/her students and not the problems.
  • Cultivate a deep understanding of his/her students, demonstrate a genuine affection for students, exemplify excellence, and motivate students to achieve at the highest levels.
  • Engage in a cycle of reflective practice regarding their own effectiveness as a facilitator of learning. Counselors should reflect alone and with others to improve all professional practices.
  • Plan and participate in parent seminars as related to group guidance curriculum.
  • Assist in the coordination of specific educational options for students.
  • Coordinate the career/occupational domain by planning career days, shadowing experiences, and mentorships.
  • Lead scholarship and financial aid efforts for college bound students

12 .Master the computer technology needed to perform daily guidance tasks.

  • Lead group registration processes and the scheduling of students new to a building.
  • Lead in the scheduling and registration of all students for the following school year.
  • Assist in the registration of students for summer school as needed.
  • Coordinate and carries out student schedule changes.
  • Maintain accurate records in all facets of the guidance program.
  • Assist in the administration of the testing programs assigned to the guidance department.
  • Attend all building and district guidance department meetings.
  • Attend professional conferences, seminars, and earn additional credit to stay current with contemporary issues in the area of guidance.
  • Assist in the development of annual and long-term guidance goals.
  • Submit agenda items for the building and district guidance meeting to the department chairperson.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
