General Information

Work Location: Bishop Animal Shelter, 5718 21st Avenue West, Bradenton, Florida 34209

Work Hours: 40 hours per week including variable daytime, evening and some weekend hours/holidays based on operational needs

Expected Starting Hourly Range: $19.51 - $24.38


This classification performs medical assistance by administering injections and medication; post-operative observation; administering medical treatments and monitoring the health and care of impounded animals in a shelter facility; medical testing and test results interpretation, inventory control and security of drugs; laboratory work and related clerical duties. Directs sanitation and feeding protocols, determines whether animals are treated or euthanized as a last resort. This position reports to the Shelter Veterinarian and is responsible for implementing all medical protocols as directed by the Shelter Veterinarian.

Working Conditions
Indoor/outdoor environment. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting objects and animals up to 50lbs.alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

Note: Manatee County Animal Services is considered a “No-Kill” facility

Job Description

Essential Functions

Apply knowledge of veterinary medicine and animal care to evaluate the health and temperament of impounded animals and determine their suitability for adoption or further treatment.

Work with the Shelter Veterinarian to develop and implement medical and health protocols, including daily observation of the shelter population for signs of illness or injury, and report any concerns promptly.

Administer medications, vaccinations, anesthesia, and injections (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous) in accordance with established medical standards and protocols.

Safely and humanely handle, restrain, and treat animals of various species, sizes, and temperaments.

Perform pre-surgical examinations, including physical assessments, diagnostic testing (e.g., fecal analysis, radiographs, blood work), vaccination updates, and animal histories.

Conduct pre- and post-surgical observations, document changes in condition, and maintain complete and detailed medical and surgical records.

Assist in the humane euthanasia of sick, injured, or unadoptable animals in accordance with established veterinary procedures and state regulations.

Maintain accurate records and ensure the security and control of federally restricted drugs and barbiturates in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and procedures.

Properly handle and dispose of biohazardous waste in accordance with safety and environmental regulations.

Oversee and ensure proper sanitation, feeding, and care protocols are followed throughout the shelter.

Establish and maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, partner organizations, and the public.

Serve as the primary liaison between the Shelter Veterinarian, Medical Director, and Animal Services Chief to ensure consistent communication and operational coordination.

May serve as Animal Care Supervisor as assigned by the division Chief and assist with staff oversight and training.

May transport animals to contracted veterinarians, partner shelters, or other approved destinations as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned, including participation in emergency or disaster response activities, as required and consistent with the employee’s qualifications, essential job functions, and applicable federal and Florida law.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in veterinary technology, or two (2) years' experience in private veterinary or shelter medicine practice assisting in surgery, medical treatments and performing diagnostic procedures.

Florida State Certification in Euthanasia or must obtain within six (6) months of hire.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications for this position.

Valid certification as a veterinary technician desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to safely and humanely pick up and handle animals, alive and deceased, up to and over 100 pounds, with assistance when needed.

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
