Peds / PICU RN – Travel Assignment OverviewUnit Details
- 15-bed General Pediatrics
- 5-bed PICU (Advanced Care Pediatrics)
- Will work across both units
- Minimum 1.5 years RN experience
- First-time travelers accepted only if:
- 2 years experience
- Must have PICU skills, including:
- Drip titration
- Ventilator patient care
- Age Range: 0–18 (plus some stable adult overflow)
General Pediatrics (1:5 ratio)
- Respiratory illnesses
- Diabetes, septicemia, cellulitis
- Hyperbilirubinemia
- Mental health, trauma, neuro
- Post-op cases (ENT, GI, ortho, neuro, etc.)
PICU / Advanced Care (1:1–2 ratio)
- Respiratory failure
- Circulatory shock
- Infectious disease w/ organ dysfunction
- Endocrine/metabolic crises
- Neuro disorders
- Toxic exposures
- Oncology/hematologic conditions
- RN License (South Dakota Board of Nursing)
- BLS – required
- PALS – required
- NIHSS – required
- NRP – NOT required
- Full patient assessment (peds → adult overflow)
- Medication administration
- Patient/family education
- EPIC proficiency
- IV starts (including ultrasound-guided)
- Lab draws (no dedicated phlebotomy team)
- CNA ratio: 1:5
- Charge nurse: Covers both units (no assignment details specified)
- RT: Available
- Hospitalist Pediatric APPs
- Pharmacy, Social Work, Case Management
- Nurse Educator / Clinician support
- EMR: Epic
- Medication system: Omnicell
- May float to:
- NICU (30 beds)
- Lower acuity “feeder/grower” patients
- Ratio: 1:3
- 1 day hospital orientation
- 2 days unit orientation
→ Short orientation, so must be comfortable quickly
- Weekend rotation: Every other
- Call: Possible low census/on-call shifts
- Holidays: Required
- Time Off: Only if pre-approved
