What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manufacturing Engineer position at Malach Metal & Machining?
About Us
Malach USA LLP is a growing North American manufacturer with operations spanning both Canada and the United States. We partner with leading OEMs and customers across a wide range of industries, transforming complex ideas and engineering designs into high-quality fabricated metal products.
From laser cutting, punching, and forming to machining, welding, and final assembly, our team works across the full manufacturing lifecycle. At Malach, our team-driven culture values safety, continuous improvement, and strong working relationships. We believe in creating an environment where people feel respected, supported, and equipped to grow their skills.
Your Impact
The Manufacturing Engineer plays a vital role as the dedicated on-site engineering anchor for our Valley City, ND facility. Reporting remotely to the cross-plant Engineering Manager, this position blends front-end technical estimation and design with hands-on production support and real-time troubleshooting. You will bridge the gap between design concepts and physical manufacturing, managing customer projects from initial blueprint review down to final floor delivery.
This position is ideal for a versatile, self-motivated engineer who enjoys problem-solving, values day-to-day autonomy, and thrives on seeing their designs and improvements come to life right on the shop floor.
Why This Opportunity Matters
- True Technical Ownership: You will serve as the sole on-site engineering face for the facility, giving you incredible professional autonomy and ownership over local projects.
- Hands-On Variety: This is not a sit-at-your-desk engineering role. You will balance advanced CAD design work with active, hands-on troubleshooting directly with production teams.
- Process Modernization: Your work will directly influence safety, quality, and workflow efficiency across our sheet metal and welding production lines.
- Collaborative Freedom: You will work with a supportive remote leadership team that trusts you to run the local engineering footprint while partnering with local plant and production management.
- Direct Business Value: Your contributions in custom fixture design and scrap reduction will have a direct, long-term positive impact on plant throughput and the customer experience.
Primary Areas of Influence
1. New Product Introduction (NPI) & Front-End Control
- Perform detail-oriented reviews and assessments of customer engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements for manufacturability.
- Identify required operations, inspections, and develop/verify accurate labor estimates and manufacturing routings.
- Create, setup, and manage Bills of Materials (BOM) for customer orders within the JobBoss ERP system.
- Control local technical production documentation, including CAD models, drawings, and flat-pattern developments for both customer contract orders and proprietary product lines.
2. Custom Tooling & Fixture Design
- Design, test, implement, and prove out flexible manufacturing tools, including custom weld fixtures, quality check-gages, and unique press-brake forming applications.
- Collaborate with production leads to optimize workstation setups, ergonomics, material flow, and overall plant layout.
3. Shop Floor Technical Support & Continuous Improvement
- Function as the local, go-to engineering point of contact to troubleshoot day-to-day production, assembly, or welding issues, developing and implementing fast engineering solutions.
- Lead root-cause investigations to solve production bottlenecks and guide practical corrective and preventive actions.
- Lead and assist with continuous improvement initiatives (5S, Lean, Kaizen) to optimize product and process flows, reduce cycle times, and minimize scrap.
4. Documentation & Special Projects
- Create, update, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and process documents.
- Lead and support local special projects, such as prototyping workflows, equipment evaluations, and the physical implementation of new machinery or shop capabilities.
- Manage project scopes, goals, timelines, and cross-functional team deliverables in a timely fashion.
Qualifications & Key Competencies
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
- Experience: 3 to 5 years of practical experience in a design, sheet metal fabrication, or hands-on manufacturing environment.
- CAD Skills: Strong proficiency using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) to model, edit, and draft parts, multibody weldments, and complex assemblies.
- Technical Print Literacy: Exceptional ability to read, interpret, and evaluate engineering blueprints; advanced knowledge of GD&T principles is a strong asset.
- Manufacturing Fundamentals: Solid understanding of standard metal manufacturing processes, including laser cutting, punching, forming/bending parameters, machining, and welding practices.
- Systems Literacy: High computer proficiency with spreadsheet data analysis and ERP software architectures (JobBoss experience is a strong asset).
- Autonomy & Communication: Excellent prioritization, organization, and clear oral/written communication skills, with a proven ability to manage site workloads independently while staying aligned with remote management.
What Success Looks Like
- Production processes become more predictable, efficient, and repeatable.
- NPI orders transition smoothly from digital blueprints into accurate, optimized shop routings.
- Waste, scrap, and rework decrease through active root-cause troubleshooting and better fixture design.
- The shop floor feels technically supported, informed, and confident in executing day-to-day production goals.
- Strong, proactive working relationships are maintained across local plant teams and remote engineering leadership.
