Summary of the Position
The Warehouse Crating and Loading Specialist is responsible for the efficient and safe packaging (crating, boxing, wrapping) of products and materials, as well as the secure loading and unloading of items onto trucks or other transport. This role requires attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to operate material handling equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Crating and Packaging:
- Measure, cut, and assemble wooden crates or pallets to specifications using power and hand tools.
- Select appropriate packaging materials (e.g., bubble wrap, foam, strapping) to protect goods during transit.
- Properly seal, label, and document packaged items with shipping information.
- Ensure all crated items comply with domestic and international shipping standards.
- Loading and Unloading:
- Safely and strategically load packaged goods onto trucks, containers, or other vehicles to maximize space and prevent shifting or damage.
- Use forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment to move items within the warehouse and for loading/unloading.
- Verify quantities and condition of incoming and outgoing shipments against manifests or packing lists.
- Secure loads using straps, bracing, dunnage, or other methods.
- Inventory and Maintenance:
- Assist with inventory counts and organization of crating materials and finished goods.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Perform routine checks and minor maintenance on crating tools and equipment.
- Report any damages, discrepancies, or safety hazards to a supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Experience: Previous experience in a warehouse, shipping/receiving, construction, or manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in operating hand and power tools (e.g., saws, hammers, nail guns).
- Certification or proven experience operating a forklift is often required .
- Basic math and measurement skills for calculating crating dimensions.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, blueprints, or crating specifications.
- Soft Skills: Strong work ethic, attention to detail, teamwork, and commitment to safety.
Physical Requirements
This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to:
- Stand, walk, bend, crouch, and stoop for extended periods.
- Lift and move heavy objects, often up to 50-75 pounds, independently or with assistance.
- Work in varying warehouse temperatures and conditions.
- Use hands and arms to perform repetitive tasks, including assembling crates and operating machinery.
