What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker position at Maintenance/Operations?
JOB SUMMARY
Primarily responsible for learning skills through in-house on the job training in the building trades arena. Trades included are carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and grounds. Work is performed from standing instruction and written work orders. The position is accountable to Skilled Maintenance and Technician staff members.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Learn under the supervision and guidance of staff tradesmen while accompanying them to contribute to the functions of Maintenance. Typical tasks are:
- Carpentry – door hardware replacement and repair, concrete repairs, furniture assembly, wall construction, wall hangings, flooring replacement.
- Plumbing – fixture preventative maintenance and repair, hot water systems operations, piping repairs, irrigation controls and repairs, line opening, backflow preventer testing and repair, snake drains and clean out waste pipe fixing leaks in water mains.
- Electrical – receptacle replacement, TV and projector installation, breaker replacement, load calculating, lighting fixture repair and replacement, fire alarm trouble shooting and repair.
- Grounds – zero turn mower operation, general grounds equipment operation and repair, shrubbery care, fertilization, assist in moves.
- Communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and Division administration as a positive representative of Culpeper County Public School system; and
- Performs other duties as directed by the Skilled Maintenance and Technician Staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Basic knowledge of the building trades and general repair work gained through a combination of vocation training;
- One (1) year’s experience in the field of maintenance work;
- Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License;
- Certificate of good health, including a TB test, signed by a licensed physician;
- Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of Building Trades application and principles.
- Knowledge of tools associated with the trades.
- Knowledge of School Board and departmental policies.
- Knowledge of National and County electrical, plumbing and building codes.
- Knowledge of safe working techniques.
- Skills/ability required to read, interpret and apply building plans and equipment diagrams and schematics.
- Skills in the safe use of hand tools and power equipment used in building maintenance work.
- Ability to keep records, purchase supplies and parts.
- Ability to work independently in performing maintenance and repairs on buildings and their mechanical systems.
- Ability and willingness to follow and give written and oral instructions and to maintain good working relationships with all employees and the public.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime when needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed using sufficient physical stamina for lifting and carrying heavy objects and climbing required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment exposes the employee to hazards include working with high voltage power, high pressure gases and working from heights safety equipment supplied. Work can be in confined spaces or outside during inclement weather. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. To ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization, employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.
EVALUATION:
The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
Salary : $32,238 - $53,483
