The First Mate is the right-hand person of the Boat Captain. They are required to meet all requests of the Boat Captain and advise them when requested regarding all matters pertaining to the ship and crew members. The First Mate must take direction from the Boat Captain and communicate any information from them to the rest of the persons aboard.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
The First Mate is the right-hand person of the Boat Captain. Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Possess necessary First Mate certifications. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
- Able to work early mornings and late nights
- Be aware that their working environment can be dangerous, especially when working during inclement weather.
- Be able to spend long periods of time on your feet, sitting or working in close quarters.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to speak and hear.
- Frequent walking with some standing at times.
- Continual use of manual dexterity and gross motor skills with frequent use of bimanual dexterity and fine motor skills.
- Able to reach hands and arms in any direction and kneel and stoop repeatedly.
- Able to spend long periods of time on your feet, sitting or working in close quarters.
- Able to work early mornings and late into the evenings.
- Inspect equipment such as cargo-handling gear, lifesaving equipment, visual-signaling equipment, and fishing, towing, or dredging gear, to detect problems.
- Observe loading and unloading of cargo and equipment to ensure that handling and storage are performed according to specifications.
- Observe water from ships' mastheads to advise on navigational direction.
- Greet all arrival guests and tag their luggage, ask if they would like a complimentary run for fruit punch and make the necessary armaments.
- Assist other departments when necessary. On occasion you may be required to assist with taking the luggage from the boat to the resort lobby.
- Keep the vessel clean and clear of hazards.
- Assume command of vessels if ships' masters become incapacitated
- Participate in activities related to maintenance of vessel security.
- Stand watches on vessels during specified periods while vessels are under way.
- If something happens to the captain or he is indisposed, the protocol of responsibility falls onto the shoulders of the first mate. He must immediately assume the role of captain to manage the ship. So, the first mate must have superior leadership skills and the same knowledge of the vessel, crew, and operations as the captain.
- Perform the work for captains on the vessel.
- Meet daily with department supervisors to facilitate the day’s activities.
- Any other duties assigned by the manager or supervisor.
