The Maine Rural Water Association (MRWA) is seeking an experienced Accounting Specialist to join our Finance team. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys a variety of responsibilities, values accuracy, and wants to contribute to an organization that supports Maine's water and wastewater utilities.

In this role, you'll work closely with the finance team to maintain accurate financial records, support budgeting and reporting processes, manage accounts receivable and payable activities, and ensure compliance with accounting standards. What You'll Do

As our Accounting Specialist, you'll play an important role in the day-to-day financial operations of the organization by:

  • Performing accrual-based accounting and assisting with monthly and year-end financial close processes.
  • Preparing and reconciling financial records, including balance sheets, income statements, and general ledger accounts.
  • Managing accounts receivable, customer billing, collections, and payment inquiries.
  • Processing accounts payable, travel reimbursements, and remote bank deposits.
  • Reconciling bank accounts, credit card transactions, and payment systems.
  • Assisting with budget preparation, financial forecasts, grant tracking, and cost center reporting.
  • Processing employee time logs and supporting payroll-related activities.
  • Maintaining the chart of accounts and supporting nonprofit and grant accounting requirements.
  • Preparing documentation for annual audits and assisting with required tax filings.
  • Providing exceptional customer service to members, utility customers, and contractual clients.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and other finance department projects as assigned.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (Bachelor's degree preferred).
  • 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience working in both nonprofit and for-profit organizations is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of accrual accounting principles and GAAP.
  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit and grant accounting.
  • Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and confidentiality.

Pay: $47,000.00 - $53,000.00 per year
