SOCI 100 Introduction to Sociology 3cr
Introduction to Sociology presents fundamental concepts and theories covering many areas of contemporary sociology. This course analyzes the influence of social and cultural factors on human behavior in such areas as culture, socialization, groups, deviance, sexuality, stratification, race, gender, economics, family, religion, and the environment. Social dynamics and social institutions will be explored, coupled with the ever-present issues of social change and the impact of these changes on society and the individual.
Prerequisites: none. Corequisite(s): ENGL-040, ENGL-080
This is a hybrid class with an in-person class meeting on Thursday, 9:30-10:45 am at SMCC’s Midcoast campus in Brunswick, with additional asynchronous online coursework.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishing and communicating clear objectives, and providing timely feedback to students
- Adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of students
- Utilizing curriculum and related course materials provided on the class website (Brightspace)
- Contributing to positive and collaborative work and learning environment
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- The successful candidate will hold a Master’s or Doctoral degree in sociology, or in a closely related field
- College level teaching experience
- Capability to use Brightspace, the online learning management system
