Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the strategic and operational leader of the Madison Main Street Program, advancing downtown revitalization through economic development, historic preservation, and community engagement.
This role works in close partnership with the Board of Directors, city leadership, local businesses, and community stakeholders to implement a forward-thinking vision that strengthens Madison’s downtown as a vibrant, economically sustainable destination.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership & Board Partnership
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, ensuring effective governance and alignment with the organization’s mission
- Provide timely, accurate, and relevant information to support board decision-making
- Collaborate with the Board on strategic planning, policy development, and organizational priorities
- Support and engage board members in fundraising, advocacy, and community visibility
2. Strategic Planning & Program Execution
- Lead the development and implementation of annual strategic plans, work plans, and organizational goals
- Ensure successful execution of all Main Street programs and initiatives
- Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, making adjustments as needed to meet evolving community needs
- Position Madison Main Street for long-term sustainability and growth
3. Financial Management & Fundraising
- Oversee the financial health of the organization, including:
- Annual budget development
- Monthly financial reporting
- Long-term financial planning
- Ensure fiscal responsibility, transparency, and compliance with all applicable regulations
- Maintain accurate financial records and oversee accounting systems
- Develop and implement fundraising strategies, including grants, sponsorships, and donor engagement
4. Community & Economic Development
- Serve as the organization’s primary ambassador and spokesperson
- Build and maintain strong relationships with:
- Local businesses and property owners
- City of Madison leadership
- State and regional Main Street organizations
- Nonprofit and civic partners
- Actively promote downtown development, business retention, and recruitment
- Enhance the visibility and reputation of Madison Main Street within the community and beyond
5. Operations & Organizational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, including quarterly and annual reporting
- Review and approve contracts, agreements, and official documents
- Ensure effective administrative systems and processes are in place
6. Team & Volunteer Leadership
- Hire, manage, and support staff, including:
- Program Manager
- Farmers Market Manager
- Interns
- Conduct performance evaluations and foster professional development
- Recruit, engage, and manage volunteers across committees and initiatives
- Build a collaborative, accountable, and mission-driven team culture
7. Marketing & Communications
- Oversee all marketing, branding, and communications efforts
- Ensure consistent, high-quality messaging that reflects the organization’s mission and impact
- Manage public relations, media outreach, and press communications
- Strengthen community awareness and engagement through strategic storytelling
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in nonprofit management, economic development, or a related field
- Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and reporting
- Exceptional organizational and project management abilities
- Excellent written, verbal, and public speaking skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives simultaneously
Preferred:
- Experience in Main Street programs, downtown development, or historic preservation
- Proven success in fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations
- Experience working with boards, volunteers, and community stakeholders
- Familiarity with marketing, branding, and communications strategy

- Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors
Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
