Position Overview

This is routine work in supervising the operations of the Courthouse parking facilities. Employees in this class are responsible for preventing unauthorized persons from parking automobiles in the parking facilities provided for designated personnel at the County Courthouse. Some independent discretion is involved in dealing with problems at the source or in reporting them to the proper authorities. Work involves responsibility for maintaining security measures over county facilities and preventing thefts from automobiles that have been parked. This person in this position frequently communicates in person and on the telephone with Elected Officials, contractors, employees, and the general public. Supervision is received through daily instructions from the Facilities Director.


The work schedule for this position is

Sunday: 3pm - 11pm
Monday - Thursday: 11pm - 7am

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)

  • Guards the entrance gate of the Courthouse basement to control traffic to and from the building.
  • Allows entrance of authorized personnel and prevents the entrance of unauthorized personnel.
  • Maintains a sharp lookout to prevent thefts from parked vehicles.
  • Drives and properly parks automobiles when requested to do so.
  • Provides fast, efficient, and courteous service to customers.
  • Performs related work as directed and required.
  • Sweep and/or pick up trash in & around the garage/parking area as needed.

  • The position requires any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in the awarding of a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma.
  • Some experience in parking automobiles.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Some knowledge of the proper procedures of operating a parking facility.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle in a safe and proper manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with officials, other employees, and the general public.

Physical Requirements

  • The employee consistently operates gate control.
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside and outside the building.
  • Must be able to observe their surroundings and be able to traverse to other office locations.
  • Must be able to see well enough to operate an automobile, and to recognize vehicles and pedestrians approaching the garage.

Certifications or Licenses Required

  • Must hold a valid driver's license and have a good driving record.

  • Monday - Thursday: 11pm - 7am

Healthcare Insurance: Blue Cross of Alabama is administered through the Local Government Health Insurance Plan (LGHIP).

Dental Coverage: Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com. Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule

  • Employer contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.

  • Flexible spending accounts (healthcare and childcare)
  • Vision Insurance
Holidays, Annual Leave and Sick Leave:
  • Minimum of 10 holidays per calendar year
  • Accrue 8 hours of annual leave and 8 hours of sick leave per month
