What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Field Services I position at Madison County Commission?
This position works independently in the performance of semi-skilled to skilled labor connected to various water system construction and maintenance activities under the general supervision of the Assistant Water Operations Manager. Primary duties include communicating with customers in a positive and accurate manner, installing water meters, and turning off water services at the customer’s request or due to delinquent bills. A water services field representative must have the ability to recognize signs of any unauthorized use of water services and must possess excellent verbal communication skills including the ability to de-escalate hostile situations. Other various responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the checking of leaks and the repair of leaks located in/around meter boxes.

- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Turn water services on and off.
- Complete meter orders and re-reads by accurately recording meter readings.
- Report water leaks and any unauthorized use of water services.
- Installation/repair of new meters.
- Repair leaks located in/around meter box.
- Isolate water main leaks using system valves.
- Use various applications of technology including GIS mapping and work order systems to complete tasks efficiently.
- Paint various structures and performs a variety of other semi-skilled maintenance and repair work.
- Service, clean, and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment as necessary.
- Drive trucks and vehicles in connection with light hauling.
- Transport vehicles to Motor & Equipment services or other facilities to be repaired.
- Notify the Water Operations Manager and/or safety coordinator of safety hazards or vehicles that will not comply with D.O.T. standards.
- Must be able to handle complex customer problems and take the necessary steps to meet the customer’s needs while using discretion and independent judgment.
- Handle and report all customer complaints courteously.
- Exercises extreme care on customer property to ensure good customer relations.
- Routine office follow-up and documentation.
- Required to be on call once every four weeks and respond to after-hours calls for non-delinquent utility accounts.
- Perform other duties as required.
- A High School graduate or equivalent is required. Plumbing experience preferred
- Working knowledge of the use and maintenance of various hand tools and simple machinery. Knowledge of required inventory and acquisition and maintenance of required inventory.
- Ability to work under minimum supervision and maintain efficiency and accuracy in job performance. Ability to understand and follow simple written and oral instructions.

- Must be physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions and be willing and available to be on call as needed.
- Must be capable of lifting to 50 pounds. Can see well enough to operate motor vehicles and hear well enough to communicate with other workers and supervisors, both by phone and in person.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Madison County Commission’s risk underwriters.
- 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
- Monday - Friday
- On-call as required
