Mini-Bus Aide-184 Days (4 Positions)

Job Goal: Provide assistance in transporting special education students.

Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or GED
2. Experience in working with handicapped children preferred
3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Transportation Specialist

Background Check Required: (Ala. Code § 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.

Required knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Skilled and effective in oral communication.
2. Good physical and emotional health, including the ability to lift and restrain students of varying age and size.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
4. Physical dexterity, mobility and strength to perform the essential functions of this position.
5. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
6. Knowledge and understanding of the school system's rules and policies, administrative procedures and state and federal rules and regulations.

Essential Functions:

1. Ensures the safety of students by buckling students in their seats and securing wheelchairs before the bus begins moving, making sure the students are seated and under control during transportation, assists students with crossing of streets, and assists students during loading and unloading at home and at school.
2. Handles emergency physical problems during the loading, transportation and unloading of students.
3. Assists the driver in maintaining discipline.
4. Constantly checks and observes on the welfare and safety of students riding the bus.
5. Cooperates fully with school administration and staff in special requests regarding student behaviors and physical management.
6. Assists students with problems related to their handicap.
7. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy and state and federal rules and regulations.
8. Maintains confidentiality with regard to student information.
9. Communicates effectively with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
10. Attends and participates in staff development and training sessions.
11. Performs other duties within the scope of his/ her employment as may be assigned.

•  This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.

• Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Expected Employment: 184 days/4 hrs. (full year)

Evaluation: According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines.

Salary: According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year).  Up to 10 years experience will be counted for new employees who provide documentation of full-time experience in the area of concentration.
