MCDD is a grassroots non-profit organization founded in the 1950s. Initially an alternative school for children with disabilities, MCDD has evolved into a day learning center for adults with disabilities in response to changing laws and community needs. Our center focuses on teaching valuable life skills, including cooking, cleaning, social-emotional learning and coping, communication, and job skills.
Position: Teacher
Job Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated teacher to join our team at MCDD. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing a curriculum tailored to the needs of adults with disabilities. This role requires a high level of patience, creativity, and commitment to enhancing the lives of our students. Additionally, the teacher will assist with personal hygiene needs, including restroom assistance and wiping.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized and group curriculum focusing on life skills, including cooking, cleaning, social-emotional learning, coping strategies, communication, and job skills.
- Provide personal hygiene assistance to students, including restroom assistance and wiping.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and growth.
- Conduct assessments to track student progress and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
- Collaborate with other staff members to ensure a cohesive and supportive learning experience for students.
- Communicate regularly with students’ families and caregivers to provide updates on progress and address any concerns.
- Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Assist with fundraisers, special events such as Camp Goodtimes, Mini Olympics, Holiday parties, and more.
Skills and Qualifications:
- No degree or certificate required.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, particularly adults, is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of developmental disabilities and strategies to support learning and development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to develop and implement creative and engaging lesson plans.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and stand on your feet for long periods of time.
