Danville, VA Full Time
POSTED ON 8/5/2026 CLOSED ON 8/11/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Industrial Sales Representative position at Machine and Fab?

Industrial Sales RepresentativeCNC Machining, Fabrication & Field Services

Company: Piedmont Precision Machine Co. Inc.
Position Type: Full-time
Location: Danville, Virginia, with regional travel and remote prospecting
Compensation: Base salary plus commission or performance incentives, based on experience

Position Overview

Piedmont Precision Machine Co. Inc. is seeking an experienced, driven Industrial Sales Representative to develop new business and expand relationships with manufacturing plants, OEMs, maintenance contractors, engineering firms, distributors, and other industrial customers.

This is not a traditional retail or inside-sales position. The right candidate will understand how industrial customers purchase machining, fabrication, repair, and field-service work. The primary goal of this position is to identify opportunities, build relationships with decision-makers, generate qualified RFQs, follow quotes through the sales process, and help convert new accounts into long-term customers.

The successful candidate does not need to be a machinist, but must be comfortable discussing technical projects, reading customer requirements, asking the right questions, and working closely with estimators, machinists, shop leadership, and field-service personnel.

About Piedmont Precision Machine Co. Inc.

Piedmont Precision Machine Co. Inc. has approximately 50 years of experience supporting industrial and manufacturing customers with machining, fabrication, production components, equipment repair, and onsite services.

Our capabilities include:

  • CNC milling and turning
  • Large-capacity CNC turning
  • Live-tool machining
  • Manual and large-capacity machining
  • Replacement and production conveyor rollers
  • Waterjet cutting
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Equipment and machine-part repair
  • Post-heat-treatment machining and repair
  • Line boring and onsite machining
  • Machine installation and setting
  • Millwright and industrial maintenance support
  • Piping and related field services
  • Emergency and breakdown-support projects
  • Short-run, prototype, repair, and production work

Our equipment includes vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers, CNC lathes with live tooling, large-capacity turning equipment, manual machining equipment, and supporting fabrication and inspection capabilities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify manufacturers, OEMs, industrial facilities, contractors, and other organizations that purchase machining, fabrication, rollers, repair, or field services.
  • Build relationships with maintenance managers, plant managers, engineers, purchasing managers, sourcing specialists, project managers, and operations leaders.
  • Generate qualified RFQs for the shop and field-service teams.
  • Conduct outbound prospecting through telephone calls, email, LinkedIn, vendor portals, industry directories, and professional networking.
  • Visit customer facilities when needed to understand equipment, parts, production challenges, and upcoming projects.
  • Ask technical discovery questions and collect drawings, specifications, material requirements, quantities, deadlines, inspection requirements, and delivery expectations.
  • Coordinate with estimating and operations personnel to ensure RFQs contain enough information to prepare accurate quotes.
  • Follow up on open quotes and identify the reasons jobs are won, lost, delayed, or placed on hold.
  • Develop relationships with other machine shops that need overflow machining, large-capacity turning, field machining, or specialized support.
  • Complete approved-vendor applications and maintain communication with customer procurement departments.
  • Develop recurring accounts for replacement rollers, wear parts, repair components, maintenance machining, and production work.
  • Reconnect with dormant customers and past accounts.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records in the company CRM.
  • Create weekly reports showing activity, opportunities, RFQs, quotes, wins, losses, and next steps.
  • Work with management to develop account strategies, territory plans, and targeted sales campaigns.
  • Represent Piedmont professionally at customer meetings, plant visits, networking events, and industry functions.

  • Ten active quote follow-ups
  • Twenty dormant-account or past-customer contacts
  • Two approved-vendor applications
  • Consistent CRM updates
  • Weekly review of industrial marketplaces, vendor portals, and bid opportunities

These targets may be adjusted based on territory, experience, account quality, and sales-cycle length.

  • OEM or contract-manufacturing sales
  • Vendor-registration and procurement systems
  • Government or defense-related contracting

Characteristics of the Right Candidate

The right person will be:

  • Persistent without being overly aggressive
  • Comfortable speaking with both executives and maintenance personnel
  • Curious about how equipment and manufacturing processes work
  • Able to listen carefully before proposing a solution
  • Focused on qualified opportunities rather than meaningless activity
  • Reliable with documentation and follow-up
  • Honest about capabilities, lead times, and customer expectations
  • Motivated by building long-term accounts, not only one-time orders
  • Willing to learn Piedmont’s equipment, capabilities, and ideal job profile

  • Commission on new business
  • Performance incentives for qualified RFQs, new approved accounts, gross profit, and customer retention

  • Opportunity for increased responsibility as the sales program grows

The final compensation structure will depend on the candidate’s industrial experience, customer relationships, and demonstrated ability to generate profitable business.
