Controller

Macdonald & Company are partnered with an active commercial real estate developer and owner/operator to appoint a Controller into their growing team.

This is a hands-on role suited to an individual who is comfortable operating in a lean, entrepreneurial environment, while also bringing the experience and credibility to implement more institutional-grade processes, controls, and reporting.

About the Role

This position will take ownership of the company’s day-to-day accounting function, with a particular focus on property and investor accounting. The successful candidate will play a key role in improving financial processes, enhancing reporting to lenders and investors, and ensuring the platform is audit-ready as it continues to grow.

The role sits at the intersection of execution and oversight, requiring both attention to detail and the ability to step back and build structure across the function.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee property-level accounting across the portfolio, including rent collections, expense allocations, and cash management
• Manage and review accounting for reserves, escrows, and restricted cash (taxes, insurance, security deposits)
• Prepare and oversee investor reporting, including waterfalls and distributions from operating cash flow and capital events
• Enhance and standardize financial reporting for lenders and capital partners
• Ensure the business is prepared for potential audits from institutional investors or lenders
• Implement and refine accounting processes, controls, and best practices as the company scales
• Oversee and coordinate with property management teams
• Work closely with ownership and leadership on financial visibility and decision-making
• Liaise with external tax advisors, with the opportunity to bring more expertise in-house over time

Qualifications

• 5 years of relevant accounting experience within real estate
• Strong experience in property accounting and investor reporting
• Direct experience with Yardi is strongly preferred
• Familiarity with waterfall structures, distributions, and partnership accounting
• Experience improving or building accounting processes in a growing platform
• CPA preferred
• Comfortable operating in a hands-on, evolving environment with broad responsibilities
