Mabton School District Migrant Graduation Specialist

 

Primary Function: A Migrant Graduation Specialist has the responsibility to help students K-12 develop skills
and knowledge consistent with the district's curriculum and goals that will contribute to the students'
development as mature, able, and responsible adults. Migrant Graduation Specialists play a critical role
in helping students with different first languages feel welcomed and valued in the school setting. The
specialist’s attitude and actions will model the kind of cross-cultural understanding and acceptance
which we want all students to demonstrate.

 

Directly Responsible To: Building Principals / Superintendent 

 

Description of Responsibilities:   


1. Implement a case management K-12 model focused on providing supplemental support and intervention strategies to
address the unique needs of migrant students.
2. Work with the district’s Migrant Education Federal Program’s director and school staff to identify and establish
program and student goals in alignment with the district’s local plan and the State Service Delivery Plan.
3. Coordinate and ensure access to other services migrant students may be eligible and entitled to receive.
4. Work with school counselor(s) to monitor and track attendance and academic progress leading toward
graduation; including discipline, credits/grades, and other social/academic issues.
5. Conduct referrals to services aligned to student’s needs that are available through school district and/or
community to reduce and/or eliminate identified barriers.
6. Facilitate appropriate scheduling options with school counselor and teaching staff for students to gain access to
AP, Highly Capable, CTE, Running Start, or regular academic core course options leading to graduation and
transition to postsecondary education or employment.
7. Facilitate access to services to address social/emotional needs; for K-12 students including educational disruption, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, various health-related problems, or other factors that inhibit the ability of
selected migrant students to meet state academic and achievement standards.
8. Foster family/school connections and conduct home visits.
9. Conduct parent information sessions to ensure that migrant students and their parents understand assessment
and graduation requirements and students understand their rights to an equitable and rigorous education that
prepares them for college and career.
10. Promote access to or develop leadership and mentoring programs to facilitate the needs of migrant students and
their families.
11. Establish a caseload K-12 in coordination with school counselor, teachers, and other appropriate staff to create a
listing of migrant students most at-risk of not meeting state standards.
12. Work with school counselors and caseload students to develop student plans/goals that lead to a successful
transition to the next grade level, graduation, and transition to postsecondary education or employment.
13. Maintain ongoing communication with counselor, students, families, and other school staff regarding the progress
of the student to achieve established goals and transition to next grade level, graduate, or pursue postsecondary
opportunities or employment.
14. Participate in professional development opportunities to strengthen skills in working with at-risk migrant students
including consolidating credits, determining high school of graduation, motivational techniques, and reporting
requirements.
Other Functions:
1. Care for district resources, equipment, and materials assigned to him/her and report concerns regarding facility
and equipment to designated supervisor.
2. Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all procedures and practices prescribed in the Staff, Student, and/or Parent
Handbooks.
3. Stay current through professional staff development opportunities.
4. Share expertise and knowledge collaboratively with other staff.
5. Demonstrate punctuality and dependability.
6. Promote a positive attitude and enthusiasm toward education.
7. Develop and maintain positive and cooperative interactions and communication with school staff, clients, and the
community.
8. Utilize established channels for handling routine procedures, resolving problems/concern and making suggestions
Minimum Qualifications: 
1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field, and;
2. Written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish, and;
3. Criminal Justice Fingerprint clearance

 

 

210 days at 8 hours per day
