POSITION SUMMARY

The Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds provides division-wide leadership, guidance, and operational support for building maintenance, grounds maintenance, fleet operations, athletic facilities, and preventive maintenance programs. Working under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director of Facilities & Maintenance, this position coordinates daily operations, supervises maintenance and grounds personnel, and helps ensure all school facilities, building systems, grounds, and exterior environments remain safe, functional, attractive, and ready to support teaching and learning .

The Supervisor regularly visits schools and facilities to evaluate maintenance needs, building conditions, grounds operations, athletic facilities, life safety systems, fleet readiness, and preventive maintenance activities. The Supervisor serves as the department's technical leader for facilities operations by providing guidance, coordinating resources, assisting school administrators, and promoting operational consistency across the division. The Supervisor promotes a culture of professionalism, accountability, safety, stewardship, teamwork, customer service, craftsmanship, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement throughout the department.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan, direct, and supervise building maintenance, grounds maintenance, fleet maintenance, and preventive maintenance operations.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities through the division's computerized maintenance management system
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities, playgrounds, athletic fields, irrigation systems, and building conditions.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance programs for facilities, grounds, equipment, and fleet vehicles.
  • Supervise maintenance technicians, grounds personnel, and fleet maintenance operations.
  • Monitor and support life safety systems and related building hardware.
  • Assist with department budgets, equipment replacement planning, and capital improvement projects.
  • Assist with recruiting, training, coaching, and evaluating maintenance and grounds personnel.
  • Coordinate exterior security improvements with school administrators and other departments.
  • Collaborate with City departments, contractors, vendors, and community partners regarding facilities and grounds projects.
  • Support waste management, recycling, integrated pest management, and environmental stewardship initiatives.
  • Evaluate operational practices and recommend improvements to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and customer service.
  • Respond to emergencies, severe weather, and after-hours operational needs as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent with three (3) years of Grounds Maintenance Supervisory experience, or relevant leadership experience, OR
  • Associates degree or Technical school certificate from an accredited institution with one (1) year of Grounds Maintenance Supervisory experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of facility maintenance operations, grounds maintenance, athletic facilities, preventive maintenance principles, building systems, fleet operations, and related operational support functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, prioritize, supervise, and evaluate the work of multiple employees while promoting a culture of professionalism, accountability, safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to analyze operational needs, make sound decisions, solve problems effectively, and respond appropriately to routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, employees, contractors, vendors, community partners, and the public.
  • Proficient in the use of technology, including work order management systems, email, mobile devices, and Microsoft Office applications or similar software.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license with a driving record acceptable to Lynchburg City Schools.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and serve as an essential employee during emergencies, inclement weather, or other operational events.
  • Ability to perform work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and other conditions associated with facilities and grounds operations.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Demonstrates the professional judgment, leadership ability, integrity, communication skills, and interpersonal qualities necessary to effectively lead personnel and support the mission of Lynchburg City Schools.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Reliable transportation, necessary.
  • Daily travel between schools, LCS buildings and local areas, required.
  • Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg, as required.
